Birds o-rama!
Get up close and personal with some of Fiordland's wildlife. Fiordland is home to a wonderful variety of native birds, whose habitat ranges from the rugged mountain and forest environments to the wild west coast seashore. The centre is open from dawn to dusk and can cater for guided tours by booking with the Department of Conservation, entry is by a gold coin Koha (donation).
There is a pleasant 15 min walk from the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre it follows an easy path around the side of the lake, past the yacht club to the Te Anau Wildlife Centre. Free flying birds enjoy the trees planted there and the ducks like the water edge below the boardwalk by the lake.

Really interesting even if you have to look for the birds a little.
Runs on donations which is great and hopefully works. Fantastic for children as well because there is so much information!

Don't miss this!
The guided tour at 9.30am was fantastic. The takahe are so special and interesting. The morepork owl and kaka are also really interesting. Entry is by donation and for such an important cause (there are only 240 takahe left). Today was a special kaka picnic party as some kaka are being released into the wild. Children foraged with rangers for kaka foods and made kaka toys. They then decorated the cages with their presents. A wonderful, affordable, and informative morning for our children. You won't see kiwi or kakapo as old reviews suggest. Go at 9.30 as they feed the birds then.

Nice walk along Lake Te Anau (from DOC visitor centre to Wildlife centre), lots to learn.

peaceful walk to excellently maintained little park, with informative notices.
Two takahe were wandering about uncaged, but were shy of being photographed, so we've got a few photos of their backs!

Was recommended, but we did not see many of the birds.
The ones we saw did not look that happy!

Free park advertised to see some Takahe.
We saw only 1 far away and only the back. There is a lot of information about NZ birds. Its a free outdoor park worth a visit if you have some time left.
