Time: 5-6 hours return, Distance: 20.7 kms
This is a route rather than a well formed trail, and much of this walk crosses private land, so please remain on the trail. Strictly no dogs or trail bikes.
From the Chinese Camp cross Bush Creek on a small wooden bridge, turn right and head up the Arrow River for 100m or so, then left onto a track just beside the pipeline of the Arrow irrigation scheme. From here you need to pay attention as the track is not always well marked, follow the 4WD tracks and the creeks. After about 10km you will get to the old Soho Homestead (which isn't that obvious...), but from here you will see 8-mile creek. Follow this until you get to the beginning of Big Hill Track (on your left as you head upstream). It's a steep climb, but once you are at the top the way back is amazing. Cruise back down to Arrowtown via Sawpit Gully and Bush Creek track. Then enjoy a cheeky Otago Central Pinot Noir as a bit of a post-trip debrief.
