Information

Peninsula Walk

3 km return | 1 hour return

It’s easy to spend too long at the tip of the peninsula with it’s sunny outlook free from the forest. It’s a sublime view looking over the bay and sound.

Walking Track

Access

From Linkwater follow Keneperu Road 19 km to where Mistletoe Bay is signposted on the right. Descend the unsealed access road 1 km to campground. The start of the track is signposted at the western side of the of the campground on the waterfront.

Track

Although named the Peninsula Walk, it is signposted Loop Track throughout. It shortly branches. Head left which leads through regenerating vegetation and pines above the emerald waters of Mistletoe Bay. After 20 minutes there’s a short detour to a viewpoint, right on the tip of the peninsula. The track then climbs gradually to another junction. Left takes you to the Queen Charlotte Track, right back to the campground.

Flora

Mistletoe Bay is named after the native mistletoe which one flourished around the bay. They are a semi-parasitic plant which photosynthesise themselves but rely on a host plant for water and nutrients. The two main species are Ileostylus micranthus and Tupeia antarctica, which display crimson flowers. Honeyeaters love their nectar.

Since the introduction of possums, mistletoe has declined dramatically. The possums gorge on the tender green leaves and one species Trilepidea adamsii is extinct. Survey work and recovery programmes by DoC are aimed at re-establishing plants in the light and airy forest margins they prefer. One day the hope is mistletoe can be re-introduced to its namesake bay.
