I'm Marios, delivering the best of Aotearoa's nature walks to your device.

The second waterfall gushes into a luxuriant bowl, dripping with ferns. The colours and aerated forest are invigorating and you could even take a dip in the plunge pool. This is the type of setting which would inspire a landscape designer.
To get to the first waterfall requires a stream crossing, so may be impassable after heavy rain.
Pelorus Bridge is 9km west of Canvastown and 9km south of Rai Valley on SH6. Tawa Path and Waterfalls tracks are accessed from the parking area by the tea rooms. For other tracks it’s safer to park on the far side of SH6 as this is a busy road.
From the tea rooms follow signs to Kahikatea Flat camping area, 300 metres down the unsealed road. Then follow the Tawa Path for 5 minutes to where the branch at the start of the track is signposted.
5 minutes on, pass the junction with the Trig K Track, then continue above the river to the first waterfall (5 minutes). This is rather disappointing with only a few drops trickling over the mossy bluff. Best caught after rain.
It’s 30 minutes alongside the river before the second junction with the Trig K Track. 5 minutes on is the second waterfall. You have to wade a few metres upstream, but it’s only ankle deep.
