Rankers Crew
Gentle Annie has consistently ranked amongst the top Camping Grounds in NZ for over 15 years now. It’s easy to see why.
If you value places that are outside the ordinary and celebrate the special little things, then you’re in for a treat here.
Gentle Annie is both physically and soulfully off the beaten path.
You really can’t lose wherever you stay, but here’s my take on the best camping spots.
Powered sites
The grassed sites numbers #20 to #24 would be my pick. All close to amenities but with great privacy and northerly outlook. The two equivalent gravelled sites are #8 and #9.
Numbers #1, #14 or #16 to #19 are closer to busier traffic areas. Not as good if you like more privacy.
Unpowered sites
Many nooks and crannies to choose from. It’s all so spread out. My personal fav’s are on the left, by the riverside as you first drive in. When at a normal flow, the river is the best / safest swimming option, try some fishing and there’s plenty of driftwood around to light a fire on the beach in front of your campsite. Or if you like some shelter away from the beach, look for the little hedged nooks they’ve crafted, which are also closer to the amenities.
The DIY Pizza oven a total winner. An evening social centrepoint.
Their cafe food is made with love and they could easily charge more, but to their credit they choose not too.
Toilet and shower block is like no other in the NZ Camping scene. I’ll let you discover that for yourself :)

The Rimu House, named after the beautiful wood it is made of, it is a very comfortable home with a view.

A fully equipped kitchen and open plan style living room opens out onto a large deck putting you amongst the surrounding native virgin forest and offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea, which is a stones throw away. A perfect spot to watch the local Hector dolphins which are often seen playing in the waves.
