Information

Milford Track

Time: 4 days, Distance: 53.5 km

The Milford Track is the iconic New Zealand overnight walk and traveller reviews suggest that this reputation is well deserved.

The Milford track is well managed to limit crowd numbers and to ensure people only walk one way. Take a water taxi from Lake Te Anau (as shown on map) to the start of the track. If there are concerns, or you want to complete this walk in luxury, there are several guiding companies that can help make this walk a cruise.

The scenery will take your breath away. Enjoy!

Very wet and rainy the first few days but still amazing.

If you can go, do it. There are often cancellations so you might be able to go last-minute.

We were very lucky because of the great weather during our four days of walking.

Great views and all of the three huts are placed very beautifully.

Beautiful, well maintained trails, rangers were nice.

It was good to have the guided huts next to the non guided shelters.

Stunning walk, well set up, beautiful scenery, crazy sandflies everywhere, cover everything - even your face.

Despite pouring rain and imminent snow, the walk afforded stunning views of the Sound and informative signs.

The weather did not provide us with the best of walking terrain but once we were wet it did not matter as the views engulfed us from all angles.

    It is impressive though.

Beautiful walk, clean huts, rangers take good care of the track and are very open for questions/information.

One downside is the mattresses in the huts.

Walked around the nature trail in the evening after everyone had left.

Beautiful. Even with the sandflies it was amazing.

    Epic.

Lots of waterfalls. Long days, no rush, communal huts at the end of each day. Incredibly scenic.

Very nice track, we saw every kind of nature, the rainforest (we were lucky with the weather).

Waterfalls. The third day was hard and it is a bit expensive.

    I can't understand why everyone hasn't given this a 10/10.

I did it in winter so avoided the crowds and would rate this among the top 10 walks in the country and since there are so many amazing walks, even 10th would be a high acolade. A moderate level of fitness would definitely add to your enjoyment as would reliable waterproof gear and a tolerance for sandflies. Access via Dore pass is challenging in winter but doable for those with good fitness and a little experience in alpine navigation

    Day walk.

Good choice if you do not have that much time to get to know the track and the nature around Te Anau.
