Information

North West Circuit Stewart Island/Rakiura

Time: 9 - 11 days, Distance: 125 km

Stewart Island (Rakiura) is New Zealand's third largest island and home to its most southern national park. Rakiura's North West Circuit track is suitable for fit, well equipped and experienced trampers. Mud is widespread and often deep and thick on the tracks, regardless of the season. Track times are an indication only and extra time should be allowed in adverse conditions. Check out the weather before you head out at any DOC office. If you are lucky you will see some kiwi the size of a medium dog - seriously.

Incredible huts at the beaches, very quiet, not many people on this track, very, very muddy!!

Great hard walk especially without bunch of walkers behind and with huts only for yourself and your mates.

Natural beauty in Stewart Island is enormous.

Can be an unforgiving track, but worth all the mud, sweat and lugging a huge pack.

The nasty tracks are the ones I remember most fondly.
