Walking in Westcoast rainforest to the falls
Roaring Billy Falls

Information

Roaring Billy Falls Walk

1 km return | 25 minutes return

Westland names are evocative of the pioneering days. This waterfall sounds like a roaring billy, the welcome sound of a revitalising hot drink on a wet day.

Walking Track

Access

On SH6, 29 km from Haast Junction (the DoC visitor Centre), the parking area is signposted on the left.

Track

A magica piece of rainforest with soft tree fern (katote) standing like sentries amongst large podocarps, including a hollow-cored matai and a rimu with a a wayward cling-on rata.

The track weaves to a bench and steps by the Haast River with views of Roaring Billy Falls opposite.

Flora

Native mistletoe is a conspicuous plant on this walk. Increasingly rare these days, as possums love browsing their succulent foliage.

    It's a walk indeed.

Very short bushwalk, nice big fall even after little rain, wide stoney river, blue glacierwater. Nice stack-some-stones stop on your way to real hikes/tramps. Not crowded but you sure aren't alone.

This walk takes you along an old mining/railroad track along beautiful West Coast river to some pretty impressive waterfalls.

Great views, but not too strenuous.

Good short walk on west side of Haast Pass....nobody else was there, making it even better.

You gotta walk over the cobbled rocks to see the blue of the Haast River right at the falls.
