3.2 km return | 1 hour return
This walk takes in both views of Mahau Sound and Havelock. It’s a pleasant stroll to get a slice of the sounds without having to venture too far from a major centre or follow an unsealed road for miles.
Cullen Point Lookout is signposted 8.5 km west of Linkwater and 3.1 km east of the Queen Charlotte Drive turnoff just south of Havelock. A sealed single-lane road leads 200 metres to the parking area with nearby toilets. The start of the track is signposted from the roadside and terminates just below the other parking area.
Following the loop anticlockwise from the roadside, the grassy track descends to sea level. Fine views extend up Mahau Sound. Fishing boats and pleasure craft navigate the inner waters near Havelock on their way to Pelorus Sound. Mount Stokes is visible on clear days.
After 30 minutes the track rounds the point. This Havelock-facing side is in lush coastal forest. Stands of silver ferns and knobbly mahoe trunks are entwined with cables of supplejack and a few rogue totara filter the light. The track then ascends back to the access road. Turn left to reach the carpark or right to reach the road.
