The river access, large grassed play area and forest walk make this an ideal spot for families. Bring lunch.
Coming from New Plymouth, where SH3 takes a sharp left turn in Inglewood, keep straight ahead over the railway line along Rata Street. Everett Park is signposted along Bristol Road after 2.4 km. Continue 4.6 km and turn left into Everett Road. Everett Park Scenic Reserve is on the right after 800 metres and the metalled access road leads 500 metres to the parking area with toilets by the Manganui River.
The northern carpark is 400 metres further up Everett Road. This has a larger grassed area and is also near the river.
The even track weaves through this memorable enclave of lowland forest and crosses a swingbridge over the Kurapete Stream to the link the two carparks.
This 77 hectare reserve was first mooted as a reserve in 1889, but only received legislative protection in 1919. It is a rare remnant of lowland forest, dominated by tawa and kamahi. It is an isolated example of the forest which once used to cover the lower Taranaki ring plain before clearance and conversion to pasture. Cattle once severely browsed the understorey, but now a plethora of ferns such as Hen and Chickens fern, crown fern and wheki colonise the understorey.
