Mount Hikurangi, the first place on mainland New Zealand to see the sunrise. A rugged place to get at one with nature. The start of the track is located on Pahikiroa Station, which is at the end of the Tapuaeroa Valley Road, 20 kilometres inland from Ruatoria. The turnoff is on a bend (north of Ruatoria) and is signposted as "Pakihiroa Station". There is public access from the Tapuaeroa Valley to the mountain, via Pakihiroa Station which is owned and operated by Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou.
There is a carpark beside the Pakihiroa station bridge. There is no public vehicle access past this point.
There is a hut about 4 -5 hrs walk from the car park. For hut bookings please contact Ph: +64 6 864 9004 or Email: info@maungahikurangi.com. You will need to book to get a space to stay, there is space for up to 10 people.
From the hut the summit can be reached in about 2 - 3 hrs of walking.
