Information

Tuahu Kauri Track

approx 2.5 km return | 50 minutes return

The Tuahu Kauri is a rare remnant of the kauri forests which once cloaked the ranges. It is 12.6m to the first branch and 2.7m in diameter.

Walking Track

Access

3.5km south of Katikati, turn into Hot Springs Road and continue to the roadend (unsealed), where the start of the track is signposted.

Track

The track is wide, metalled and even. It climbs gently to the Tuahu Kauri, then veers left along a narrower, more uneven track (3 minutes). You can continue along the main track for a further 1 minute to another track on the left, which leads to the Tuahu Kauri along a metalled and more even surface.

Both lead to a boardwalk by the tree.

Flora

The kauri (Agathis australis) reaches the southern limit of its distribution near here. The hammer marked trunk of flaking bark is used to keep the trunk free of creeping epiphytes.

In the branch clefts of the crown are whole communities of epiphytes, perched and sustained by the tree’s enormous bulk.
