One of our favourite campsites of the whole trip, beautiful bay, cheap good showers, no check out time, and lovely well looked after site - it’s only lost one star (from no fault of its own) because I
found the drive down to the bay a bit challenging (but it is totally possible!)

Such a beautiful campsite right on the beach.
$15 an adult is a good price for camping directly next to the beach with access to a kitchen , $2 showers and flushing toilets. One of my favourite campsites I’ve ever stayed at ! Very peaceful.

Fantastic camping ground.
Lots of space with large (unallocated) sites.
There are 2 well equipped amenities blocks with pay showers, pay laundry facilities, clean toilets, and basic kitchens with boiling water, stoves, prep benches, sinks, a small amount of fridge space and huge freezers. There are outlets in the block, so you can plug your phone charger in while you shower or cook. No pots, pans, knives, dish cloths etc, so remember to bring your own.
There are water taps everywhere, so no need to carry heavy cans very far. Just be aware that the tap water is untreated and is not considered potable. Bring drinking water with you or boil the tap water for at least 3 minutes to make it safe to drink.
Lots to do with both a swimable lagoon/estuary and beach, playground with flying fox, walks, bike track, and local museum. We really enjoyed just sitting and listening to the birdsong and the sound of the sea.
Big rubbish skips for rubbish and recycling. Please sort your rubbish (we saw non-recycleable waste in the recycling, which contaminates the whole bin).

Beautiful location right by the beach, the road down was wiggly but fine in a small Escape campervan.
Facilities were basic but clean and suitable for the price.

Beautiful cove and beach right by the camping area.
Loads of space and a great indoor cooking area. The road down is quite steep and windy - wasn’t too big of a problem for an escapecampervan.

Huge campground right on the beach.
Plenty of space for everyone and a large variety of camp sites. Make sure to book before you arrive as the cell coverage is sketchy and you may not get wifi. The office is not always open. Pay $2 for a shower if you need one. Hot boiling water in the kitchen. Bring your own equipment for the kitchen. Toaster and hot plates ONLY there. No oven. Take your own water as the water there has to be boiled 3mins before drinking. Lovely spot. The road is extremely windy and steep so drive with extreme caution.
Great place to chill out and relax.

Okains Bay is glorious, there’s an amazing cave to explore and the sunrise is breathtaking!
Unfortunately didn’t really like the camp site. Looked a bit shabby and uneven ground. Old pine trees block the view to the beach and many more have been cut down in the camp and used as garden edging or their stumps left where they are. Felt like we were on an old forestry logging site and did wish we’d gone elsewhere. Having said that, the facilities were spotlessly clean and couldn’t fault them. Shower was $2 for 4 mins and worked completely fine.

Really lovely camping ground with beach access and really good, clean facilities.
Busy wee spot and I imagine in height of summer it could be very noisy. For us we managed to stay when a group had snuck in to party which went till after 4am! Staff did their best tho and were apologetic (not their fault). Would definitely stay again but would avoid high point of summer - that's just a personal choice as we prefer less kids and less people 😉 🤣

What a terrific campsite, if you like to have no signal and a beautiful place on the beach, go here!
It feels that you are at the end of the world so nice. Facilities basic but good and clean, hot shower 2 NZ for 4 minutes. Playground very nice and when with low water check out the mussels who are delicious. We had a great 2,5 day here.

Stayed here 3 nights, my 1st stop on a x-country campervan tour of NZ.
I enjoyed the natural environment and the facilities were 1st class. The only 2-3 drawbacks for me :
1) no powered sites, or recharge living room
2) no cell service (although, from the hill, there is a signal - 1-2 kms away)
3) ½ hr away by car from Akaroa
If you can live with that, it is a great place.
Price is $13 for site... park where you want... not crowded.
