I'm Marios, delivering the best of Aotearoa's nature walks to your device.
I've personally walked hundreds of New Zealand's tracks and spent months in libraries uncovering interesting information on New Zealand/Aotearoa. And you'll find a slice of that research on this page - enjoy!
2.4 km return | 50 minutes return (to river)
Lots of water, not much space to squeeze through. When water meets a rocky obstacle it carves a gap following the line of least resistance. This narrow chasm is an example of the water power in partnership with gravity.
The start of the track is signposted from the carpark 2.5 km from the Visitor Centre in Arthurs Pass Village, heading towards the pass.
Descend via steps to the bridge over the nascent Bealey River and the Bealey Chasm.
Continue along the metalled and rocky track through beech forest to the track end at the river.
High snow clad peaks surround the bowl.
Return via the same track. It is dangerous to either cross the river or continue further, as this is an alpine environment.
The Bealey Chasm is a narrow gut of resistant rock, which the water is forced through. The fixed volume of water accelerates as it is funneled through the gap, increasing its erosive potential and scouring down into the block of rock.
Friendly South Island robins reside here, feeding off coprosma berries and insects.
