We stayed in the cabins as the communal facilities were closed, presumably being developed.

Powered sites were still available. The cabins were actually great and the location is perfect for getting to Spirits Bay, Te Paki Sand Dunes and Cape Reinga so I would recommend this place. This is also the last gas and convenience store/cafe takeaway food stop. Travellers should note there is no phone or Internet connection for most of the far north including here. The roads to beaches are also really rough gravel around the area. We helped a few people stranded after breaking down.

The cleaner and one of the staff members were friendly.

The mosquitoes are prolific but that's really just NZ nature and not the fault of staff.

It seems like the staff have made some improvements since the reviews below.

A couple more improvements I would recommend would be some rubbish and recycle bins around the campsite and for the take away store. There were none outside of the cabins. The mattresses were really old but considering the reasonable price over new year's eve we weren't complaining. Also it seemed staff were fed up with travellers asking to use their toilet. As they did have a take away shop and gas station it seemed like it would be fair to allow customers access to the cafe toilets.

Warning - at the moment (Jan 2019) they do not allow camping, as their facilities are 'being upgraded'.

So the only option is a $90 cabin for the night.

    AVOID THIS CAMPSITE!

The facilities are a disgrace; they are in need of refurbishment and a good clean as well. In addition, they charge too much for such poor facilities. The voracious mosquitos are not the fault of the campsite but some sort of warning would be helpful for the unwary!

Not nearly as bad as previous reviews suggested.

Certainly not the best place, but not the worst. The staff were very helpful. The communal kitchen is functional and the rooms are adequate. A good cleaning would help rooms and common area, but they are OK. For us this was a much better option than camping in the rain.

Bathroom was OK, you have to buy extra coins for warm showers (2dollars each).

Kitchen facilities were laced with lots of dead mosquitos because of the toxic spray they used inside. The night wasn't that noisy but in the evening/night there were thousands!!!! of mosquitos!!! Overpriced for this campsite.

Easily the worst value camping ground I have stayed in: overpriced, poorly laid out, low standard of facilities and hygiene, noisy, vaguely scary and unsettling as well.

The rooms smelled musty; the water in the bathroom was off colour and tangy; the power went off for two hours; cars and rooms are clearly visible from the road. Repeated difficulties getting hold of the manager before, at the end of and after our stay, particularly when it came to discussing the bill. Stay further south for your dream dawn excursion to Cape Reinga.

The worst campsite we visited during 5 weeks of travelling.

The showers and kitchen were absolutely filthy and they had the audacity to charge $30 for this! Internet was charged at $5 for 15 minutes. Never again! You have been warned.

    Very shabby.

It was more a truck stop than a campsite, drunk lorry drivers, my wife verbally insulted and we left.
