Toretore Island is situated between Paihia and Russell and provides fine views.
From Russell, follow Russell Road towards Okiato and after 6km turn right into Te Wahapu Road. Follow it 3km to the roadend. Toretore Island is signposted from a small parking bay.
Toretore Island is connected to the mainland at mid-low tide via a shingle bank.
Head towards the end of the point for 5 minutes along the rocky foreshore to Toretore Island.
On the island a wide, well-formed track traverses its length, terminating in a steep bluff. There are a few sometimes slippery rocks to negotiate.
Return by the same route.
Toretore Island causes confusion when the total number of islands in the bay need to be counted as at high tide it is an island and at low tide it’s joined to the mainland by a causeway.
In Te Wahapu Bay, a trading post and ship repair yard were established by Gilbert Mair in 1831. His house stood on the point next to the Norfolk Island pine planted by his wife. Toretore was nicknamed ‘Nobby’, probably by one of the Mair’s children.
