This huge stump is nearly 5 metres in diameter. It now gives life to ferns and mosses.

Walking Track

Access

Access to Omahuta Forest is along Omahuta Road, 800 metres south of Mangamuka Bridge. After 5.6 km it bears right, turning into Kauri Sanctuary Road (signposts with road names are sparse).

The start of the track is signposted.

Track

The track is wide, metalled and even. After the stump, the track continues 20 metres to the discarded crown.

European History

You can see the remains of the scarf, which determined the direction the tree was to fall. The final cut was made at an angle, giving the stump an inclined slant. It would have taken 4-6 men to fell a tree of this size.

The nearby crown was discarded and only the substantial straight bole of the trunk was removed for milling.
