No where as spectacular as the train journey from Auckland to Wellington.
Plus breakdowns meant we were running 3 hours late and consequently were travelling at least 2 and a half hours in the dark missing the scenery we booked the trip to see.
Can’t recommend this on.

Best train trip I have experienced in my life so far.
Stunning views!! Would definitely recommend this to any traveller in New Zealand as it is really a unique journey.

We got the train from Springfield rather than paying to go through the suburbs and Christchurch which was a good idea.
Enjoyed the trip, great views, especially from the observation carriages but then you could not listen to the commentary. There was no notification that the train was running over an hour late on return - a notice could have been posted at the station.

I travelled from Greymouth to Christchurch.
A great and comfortable journey over the New Zealand Alps. Open air carriage is perfect for taking photos. Not a cheap adventure though.

Train is pretty comfortable, but even one way was too expensive for what the brochure said about the scenic experience.
Good coffee though.

Comfortable carriages with clean windows for taking photos.
Return trip seating allowed viewing of both sides. Friendly staff, excellent quality food (best steak pie in New Zealand), shame that the audio system is not inside and outside.

Mixed feelings.
Did the return trip, outward our carriage had no commentary, lots of photo opportunities. On return, less people and the driver did not want to stop at all.

great trip from Christchrch to Greymouth.
Greymouth doesnt sound like such a good place to visit but we had a great time. A wonderful cycle trail, an awesome glow-worm cave tour with a zipline and some great rinforest kayaking

Rode all the way from Greymouth to Christchurch.
Great views for most of the trip (last bit into Christchurch is boring). Excellent views up to Arthurs Pass and then beyond. Some excellent photo opportunities wrecked by barriers erected on some bridges. They are no barriers on any of the other great train rides in NZ so why here? Shortly after the start of the most spectacular part of the journey I gave up my prize position in the viewing car to a young couple for some shots. My politeness and consideration was rewarded by them, and others, hogging the good positions. I tried to take some photos and ended up with great shots of hands, backs of heads. Moral is that if you get a good position don't be considerate like me, be selfish like others. This had not been an issue on the other train journeys I had. People had shared the best positions. With this train being so popular why not another viewing car?

Inadequate observation cars, very late both ways. Expensive for what you get. A bus would have been better.
