    I have rented cars all over the world and Scotties is up there with the best of them.

    Their city location in Auckland is very convenient. The car I had was a Toyota Corolla and I had no problems.

    Wellington- they [icked me up at a moments notice from the airport, helped me through the payment process, was booked at the last minute, I extended my mirage easily and the drove me back as well.

    The service was delightful and I will use them again.

    Beware.

    The dodgiest car rental company I have dealt with. Also known as Economy car rentals

    Firstly, I booked saying I arrive at 6 pm. They called me just before I tooked the flight saying that I am arriving 'late'. They close at 5 pm. There will be extra charges, that wasn't disclosed earlier. Argumentative on the phone, no apologies for not mentioning this on booking on their website.

    Wait there is more.

    They asked me to fill in an online form at the airport, a form where you couldn't scroll down and unselect the expensive options.

    They booked a GPS at 10 dollars a day, that I didn't want. I protested and called back on my cellphone from the airport, which would have cost as much as the GPS call.

    They relented.

    Once I got there they charged insurance which cost nearly as much as the car, despite me not choosing that option on their online form. Once I got back to the airport to drop this off. I brought this up, the guy insisted it was my mistake until he looked at the online form. He emailed Wotif to give me a refund, still waiting for it.

    I am not hopeful.

    There are options for after hours pick up. When they book they are told to contact us for out of hours options and are given a link to the after hours options. This is so we get the best option for the customer. Most people have no problems with our form. You do not have to untick the options but write which option you want. As soon as Dr Song told us he had not wanted the insurance it was refunded. It was a simple mistake. Why would we email Wotif, it's nothing to do with them? Confused.

    A terrible place.

    GO ELSEWHERE!. Car was filthy, had over 177,000kms and BROKE DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY. Keith made multiple false statements during check in and coerced us into paying for unnecessary additional insurance. At return we asked for reimbursement of tow truck charges and were told "no managers were available, but they would get back to us. No one did. This place is horrible - AVOID SCOTTIES AT ALL COSTS!

    Never before have I been so traumatised dealing with a staff member from Scotties.

    I spoke to Brian on the phone to arrange a pick up when I arrived in Queenstown airport. He was very rude and condescending.

    He said I haven't filled out "check-in" form that they've apparently emailed me. I explained that I never got the email but he kept talking over me & argued that they've sent it. I gave my email address again and he says my email was too difficult to write. How is this my problem?

    All my contact info was provided in the original booking, maybe he should have checked it.

    After waiting for >45 mins Christian came & picked us up to their office. He was nice and apologetic, but Brian doesn't work at the same office.

    In my experience, the rental company picks up the customer and go to their office and do the paper work.

    I understand they're short staffed, but the rudeness from Brian is unforgivable.

    No one should ever experience the rudeness and incompetency from Brian who hasn't a clue of what customer service is.

    It's not the impression you'd want of NZ.

    Avoid this company if you want a pleasant experience.

    Appalling presentation of Nissan Sudan that I picked up on 8th,March 2022.

    Ripped seats, filthy stains on the seats, high kilometres and only quarter of a tank of petrol on pick up. Who do these cheap people think they are to have the nerve to rent out cars in this low standard to customers?

    Had a near miss tonight because headlights weren't working. Road rage incident as a result. Stressful and awful.

    Scotties Car Rentals are crooks in my opinion. Laying a formal complaint to all authorities I can find.

    I have rented cars all over the world and Scotties is up there with the best of them.

    I strongly recommend to stay away from Scotties: Good price came with a hefty price tag for gas for me (16l / 100 km!) for a badly maintained old, small car.

    Please note, I tried to contacted them directly, but no response, hence the warning.

    Step by Step:

    I picked up a gold Nissan Tiida on a Saturday morning in February. Car was pretty worn down and old like all cards on their lot that day. Short overview: Mileage over 150.000km, cuts in the seats and scratches all over. But I was assured the car had just passed official inspection. As I don't mind old cars, I went my way. After half a day I realized that the smell was permanent and the car moved to the left whenever I let the wheel go for a split second. Then the door seal came off. I called and went back to Christchurch the next day to pick up a replacement.

    After much apologies I received another Nissan Tiida, with similar scratches, mileage over 150.000km and "optimizable" tires (btw their cars only speak Japanese, because they are direct imports). When I asked about the inferior condition of the cars, I was told "you booked a cheap car". I did not want to argue that cheap and small does not equal crappy and small, because the car seemed old but alright and I finally wanted to leave town. The woman assured me she test drove it herself.

    Fast forward a few days. Found a few broken things, but nothing major. BUT: I realized the car was using a lot of gas. Instead of the usual 8-9l I ended up with AN AVERAGE OF 16L/100km. For a Nissan TIIDA. For a 2.000 km/10 day trip this equaled in roughly another 350-400NZD for gas.

    The rental price was cheap though.

    Worst car rental service ever !

    Worst car rental service ever ! Our bags got delayed at the airport and we were stuck at airport for longer. When called later for pick up , we were asked to fill up a long form, the guy was on the phone was extremely rude and dint help. Later next day when we went, we came to know we dint have to fill any form , also we were not informed earlier that there is no after hour pick up. To top it all, they tried to overcharge us , we came across some more people who had similar issues. Please do not rent from this place.

    First off we land at the airport in Aukland and cant find their kiosk anywhere.

    I ask customer service, and I tell them I booked with Scotties and they laughed at me. We had just arrived on a marathon trip from Canada with two small children, and found out that we were after hours and no one was at the offsite office. We had to go through an online form to get our car, none of this information was relayed to us prior to landing. Through the online form you have to submit a copy of your drivers license except it would not accept the format of the photo. We went back and forth with someone on the phone long distance. Anyways the worst part was that after its all said and done, I find a charge from scotties for 500 NZ on my credit card, even though it was all paid for through air miles. I figure it was a deposit and would be refunded, that was in November 2018, we are now at April 2019 and still it has not been resovled!!! I go back and forth through emails with them (since I can't seem to find a number that will accept international calls) then they just stop responding. I start emailing back and forth again and they forward it to someone else, then crickets again.

    Its a joke stay away!! Your better off paying full price at a legitimate rental company.

    Everything went very smoothly for our 1 month car rental from Christchurch to Auckland.

    The car was in great condition, communication easy. To us the perfect experience. We would definitaly come back at Scotties.

    I collected my car from Christchurch airport.

    I was picked up at the terminal way quicker than any other rental company I have used before and taken to the Scotties depot where the paperwork and handover was very quick and easy. It was Anneka who collected me at the terminal and did all the paperwork and handover--- she could not have been nicer and is a great ambassador for Scotties.

    It was equally quick and easy to return the car at Auckland airport. The car was an older model which is to be expected from a low-price rental company, but it ran like a dream and everything worked like new for the 1000km I covered.

    This was my first experience of using Scotties, but I would definitely be happy to use them again and recommend them to friends

    I was not impressed how scotties went about charging me they purposely did everything in dollars and the used a banks webpage to total out the final price in $NZ.

    they converted the money and then charged me in $NZ there for they secretly added 10 cents per dollar to the final total, there should be no reason for that my they do not get charged to convert money because they charge my card in local currency.

    The Vehicles - are ok after all this is a budget rental i had to change car due to mechanical issues. I considered both vehicles radio unless both would only go to 89.9 and the start at 77.3 because they are old imports and one of them was in Japanese with out an option for english.

    WE were quoted $176 for 4 days in Queenstown for a small car.

    We ended up paying $376. When we asked about it said that we were quoted initially in US$ even though we booked in New Zealand and we are newzealanders. The service was absolutely appalling and the person that talked with us on the phone was the rudest person I have even met in my live. Absolutely appalling

    We were staying in New Zealand for a while and we were traveling a lot.

    The best option to rent a car was definitely Scotties Car Rental! There were many car types, for a long trips we had a tourist-sleeping-car in which we also got pillows and blankets for sleeping and pans for camping. All the cars are clean and comfortable. At Scotties we also had the best prices we could find for car renting. And what we want to note particulary is great friendly staff - they are always in touch and ready to help! A lot of thanks for the Scotties-team! Highly recommended for everyone! Jonas and Irina

    Drove the vehicle over 4,000 Kms and the vehicle was great.

    There were two downsides . 1 - was there was no music import whether that being aux or Bluetooth. 2 - the service near the airport was not very organized and very slow.

    The price was amazing so I would recommend but bring a wireless speaker and expect a delay when dropping off or picking up the vehicle.

    Thanks for taking the time to write us a review. Our older vehicles don't have bluetooth or AUX input however adaptors are available throughout the country at several shops. We should've recommended this to you. Traffic around the airport, especially Auckland Airport can be pretty heavy and we do our level best to collect customers in as timely a manner as possible. We apologise for the delay. Nonetheless I'm happy to hear you had a great time, sounds like you covered quite a bit of ground!.

    WORST experience ever, rented a car in Wellington, they were late & when I rung them for a second time to establish an ETA the director Keith proceeded to mock me, call me names & inferred my patronage

    was not worthy. Sincerely my worst customer service experience. I had to drop the car to their Miramar address with key in glove box unlocked. The car was below average and although I booked an airport drop off I was told to find my own way from their Miramar address 2.6km away from airport. This was without checking the vehicle was clean & free from damage, so should something happen to this car in the driveway (unlocked) after I drop it off I could not be responsible. Take heed to this, although they seem cheap there are hidden costs & because they are cheap Keith believes this entitles him to belittle you if you have any issue at all. I have read many reviews that reflect this attitude is consistent. I also got insurance when I rented car online via Expedia but they required a $2000 hold on my credit card (I doubt the car I hired was worth $2000) FYI I paid $100 for two days, NOT WORTH IT, go to a reputable agency in the airport save yourself time & peace of mind

    Firstly let me apologise for any upset caused, we are going into 2019 with a fresh approach, a strong emphasis on customer care and newer vehicles on the way. Whilst receiving negative feedback is never pleasant it serves a very important purpose for our development as a company. As a growing locally owned brand we are always looking to improve and we're dreadfully sorry to hear you had such an unpleasant experience.

    The $2000 bond serves as a security and is inline with the Insurance excess rather than the value of the individual vehicle. Almost all NZ owned companies enforce a bond which is returned to the customer upon safe return of the vehicle.

    Our Wellington branch is the smallest in our family and has around 20 cars, I have spoken with the Operations Manager and she is working with her small team to ensure the cars are clean and presentable at all times with a strong emphasis on providing the best possible customer care.

    Once again I apologise for any inconveniences caused and wish you all the best for 2019.

    Our first email stated that we were to pick up our car from the airport with the directions that it was only a 30 second walk from airport.

    Could not fault the car

    But the service was Horrendous

    When I booked online I stated our arrival time, asked for a nav man and that I wanted to pay via travel money card.

    When we arrived at the airport, we received a email to say our car was parked at the actual company that the car come from which was a good 5-10 minutes from the airport and then we had to pay for a taxi to get there. When we rang a taxi company that were suppose to be Scottie’s friendly they hadn’t even heard of the company. It cost us $40 to get to our car.

    We get to our car to discover no nav man so after numerous phone calls as no one was at the company on a Friday afternoon/night we had to drive into the city to pick up our nav man. After asking for our travel card to be charged I had been charged on my MasterCard which then I had to pay the exchange fees.

    So I have ended up paying a large phone bill from using my phone to call and also use a map to get into the city whilst having 3 screaming kids in the back of the car. Not a good start to our holiday

    I had also called up the company the week before asking all of the above

    Questions and I was assured that if I documented everything in the notes section of my booking that it would be fine, so no body obviously bothered to look at it.

    Scottie's provided four cars through eleven days of amazing New Zealand discovery.

    They were always nice, the prices were astonishingly less than the internationally-known names and when I had questions, I got helpful answers. If you're going to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Queenstown they're who you want to pick. Even before my trip, when I emailed a question, Scottie himself CALLED me in the US about 10 minutes after I sent my email.

    In February 2018 we rented a car from Scotties for a weekend.

    The car was NOT what we ordered, told to take car back with same amount of petrol, on the documents it read 1/4 full, CHECK - IT WAS EMPTY. Documents amended immediately. Checked condition and there was more damage than was stated, amended documents. Great weekend, no problems with the car. Returned car and handed over Visa card to have the $3000 hold removed. NOW WE ARE STARTING A LONG AND HORRIBLE JOURNEY. Instead of refunding the hold they put a PURCHASE AGAINST OUR VISA FOR $3000. I checked our visa several weeks latter and was distressed to find the money still on the Visa card. Called Scotties and was told that there had been a mistake and someone would phone me back and the money would be reversed - NEVER HAPPENED. I phoned them back (I have all the dates and conversations written down to verify all this), the man that answered the phone asked Annie Scott if she would take my call, I heard her say - oh, she is ONE of them (I am assuming that there were more than us with incorrect charges to their credit cards), she told the man to put the phone on hold and she would talk to me, he didnt put it on hold, he put the phone down on the desk and left it open and I heard her conversations in the back ground. It appeared to me at the time from listening to her that she was deliberately keeping me waiting. Annie Scott was aggressive, in-polite and obstructive, refusing to return my money, instead telling me to go thru my visa company. I did this and they said she could have reversed the payment immediately and I had to ring her back and give her the chance to do this. I rang her back and she blatantly refused. It has been a long process but the money is back now. She has had a loan of my money and others for months gaining interest. If you are thinking of hiring from this company - BE WARNED - DON'T.

    We are so incredibly sorry for this Christine. We had a new staff member who accidentally put through the bond hold as a purchase. This was totally an error on our part and we accept full responsibility. This was a situation that had never happened before and it took some time for us to be able to reconcile the funds.

    Since your experience in February we have retrained ALL of our staff across New Zealand to ensure that this mistake never happens again.

    I wasn't sure what to expect from Scotties.

    On one hand they have lots of good reviews and then on the other they have a few not-so-good ones. I can only speak from my own experience and mine was overwhelmingly positive . Everyone I met was friendly and helpful. The car itself was pretty good, just a little town runabout. It did the trick nicely and I would happily use Scotties again.
