We did the underworld rafting tour with Mark and had the most incredible day. The caves are way Better than Waitamo, less touristy, and the tour was a highlight of our trip. Worth every penny, HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Ha! We didn’t do the paid adventures (hence only 5) but did have coffee and cake in the cafe. Good stuff. There is also an observation deck at the top of the building

This is a really cool experience; walking through caves, viewing and learning about the amazing formations along the way, then going for a cruise in your tube while you look up at the most incredible viewing
of glow worms, followed by a faster fun ride down the river in your tube.
We had a really nice and friendly kiwi tour guide who had great knowledge to share on to us.
Awesome day, highly recommend!

Fantastic experience!
The cave was amazing, we felt safe the whole time and enjoyed the remarkable experience of exploring amongst precious stalactites and stalagmites, then floating along below billions of glow worms- it was like being on another planet! I highly recommend this activity for anyone who loves adventure!

Began with a short bus ride, then a train ride on a teeny weeny train through magnificent primeval rainforest.
A tour through the cave, stalagmites, stalactites. Then we hopped into our tubes and went down a river in the cave, staring up at glowworms, really magical!!! For the finale, a tour in our tubes down the river. Could not bring the camera but guides took photos and downloaded them for free!!!

We have nothing but praise for Geoff, his staff and our awesome guide, Mark.
Housed in an awesome new purpose built building, the Underworld Adventures team gave us a day to remember for the rest of our lives. The 15min train ride is great fun, the walk up to the cave entrance is another 20 mins and then you're in the caves exploring and learning from your expert guide for the next 1.5-2 hours. Then you reach level 3 of the caves and jump in your rafts for simply the best glowworm experience ever. Finally you are out of the cave exit and onto the river for a short but enjoyable trip down the river and some rapids. Back on the train and then back to base for a hot shower. Our guide ordered us food on the return train trip and it was ready for us after our showers which was a great touch. Our pictures are brilliant.
A note for those that have left a few negative reviews, this is the West Coast of New Zealand, sandflies are rampant here, use bloody inspect repellent and stop moaning at the staff for forces of nature they have no control over....some people aren't happy unless they are moaning!

We bought tickets for 50% on grabone, and it was worth every cent!
If we would have paid the full price, we would have been a little dissapointed. We wanted to do this because of the tubing, and that part unfortunatly just took 10-15min.
Still... We had a GREAT guide! And the people in the office were soooo nice and helpfull!
Our trip first got cancelled because of the weather, and they brought us to a backpackers and picked us up there the next morning to go on our adventure, awesome! :)

Train ride through forest was interesting, changing into wetsuits at the end of train ride on the wet un covered platform, then walking and climbing a long way carring a rubber tube before entering the
cave, most of the underwater rafting was spent walking in the cave, the rafting was only about 30mins, because the river was low, there was spots were we had to walk, little time was spent rafting in the cave, as far as adrenalin, well not.
Be carefull when booking, as if there are no people you cannot go, they may change your booking whether if you have other plans.

Superb!
A great, well-balanced day out! One of the best things we did during our month in the South Island, and we did a lot of stuff!
The team work VERY hard to make sure you have a good time. The cave which they use (they have sole access) is accessed by a fun railway, and it provides the right amount of fun whilst being informative. The glow-worms are stunning and the final float down the river was a lovely end to the trip.
Isn't it nice when an activity INCLUDES the photos in the trip, well done these folks!

I did the cave rafting experience and it was one of the highlights of my trip.
As others have mentioned, the rafting is not an adrenaline experience - it was the scenery and peacefulness that did it for me.
Starts with the train then walk through the rainforest. The walk through the caves to the river included lots of information about caves and stalagtites/mites and there were no tight spaces to squeeze through. Once we were on our rubber rings and floating through the dark with thousands of glow-worms twinkling abover our heads it was really special. Fantastic experience.
The rafting finished with a very peaceful float down the river surrounded by rainforest. There was one short bit with fast flowing water and if you wanted to you could carry your ring back to the start of this and do it again. There hadn't been much rain before my trip so the water was low and this may be why it was so peaceful.
The team were friendly and knowledgable and I loved the whole experience. Thanks

This company runs several different types of activities in the caves.
I did the adventure caving (about $330 nz), for about a 4 hour trip.
This trip was brilliant (although pretty scary for a coward like me). Adventure caving is not a simple scenic glowworm tour, it is a genuine adventure.
First we abseiled 50mtrs down into the cave. Then we went caving. There were many tight spots to squeeze through, some army crawling through water in small spaces was involved, some climbing up through the cave upstream, and there were skinny chasmy bits to navigate our way over. It is pretty physical and really tested my nerve (but others on the trip were braver than me and didn't feel any fear). We all however, found it very intense!
Our guide Jacqui, was also incredibly knowledgable about the caves, (their formation etc.) and was a very experienced caver.
The only downside is you might be a bit uncomfy in all the gear they give you.
I would recommend this tour to anyone fit who has a sense of adventure. In some ways it was the highlight of my month in nz.
