4 km return | 2 hours return
This is a non-stop steady and steep ascent to the first lookout on the much longer ascent to Mt Fyffe Hut and Mount Fyffe itself.
Just south of the turnoff to Kaikoura town centre, turn into Ludstone Road. After 1 km head right into Mt Fyffe Road (Hinau Walk signposted). After 5 km this turns left into Postmans Road, which becomes unsealed after 3 km. Bear right into Chapmans Road after 4.5 km and follow DoC signs the last 4 km to Mt Fyffe carpark. The start of the track is signposted by the information board. Toilets and a picnic area are close-by.
It follows a 4WD track around the spur with views over Kaikoura town and the Kowhai Valley. The lookout is just past the fire pond, where the gradient eases a little.
At the lookout there are also views over the gut between the Mount Fyffe ridge and the major peaks of the Seaward Kaikouras, including Snowflake (1870 metres), Mount Saunders (2146 metres) and Manakau (2608 meres).
