Information

Coal Creek Track

3.6 km return | 1 hour return

The shady podocarp-beech forest cloaks a terrace above Coal Creek. New Zealand’s only loop root is 5 minutes from the start of the track on the left. The falls are a pretty series of cascades, most spectacular after rain.

Walking Track

Access

From Greymouth follow SH6 north for 6 km to Runanga.

Coal Creek Falls are signposted along Seddon Street, then right into Fraser Street, which leads to Ballance Street.

The start of the track is signposted from the parking area at the end of the street.

Track

The well-graded track follows a terrace above Coal Creek, passing a loop root and an anaerobic bog before descending gently to the falls.

Flora

Anaerobic decomposition takes place when vegetable matter decomposes in the absence of oxygen, creating sulphur dioxide as a by-product - the same ingredient as rotting eggs, flatulence and old men.
