This track finds some impressive kahikatea growing by the trackside. Their twisting roots anchor the substantial trees in the shallow soils and form convoluted patterns before merging with the trunks.
This track is an extension of the Short Loop and is signposted from the footbridge at the far end of the loop.
This unsealed track continues to follow the Kareaara Stream upstream before crossing the footbridge and descending the other side. Magnificent boardwalks and occasional benches are provided as points to dwell and absorb the lush greens of the forest. A large picnic area is situated at the far junction with the Short Loop.
The forest is dominated by massive kahikatea, joined with emergent matai and rimu. Tawa, titoki and pigeonwood are among the many canopy trees which are entwined with climbing rata, supplejack and passion vines. Nikau and tree ferns add to the lushness of the forest.
The forest is brought alive with avian residents including kereru, bellbirds and grey warblers. Short tail bats also flutter by night.
