Koro Kahikatea is an character who delivers a poetic and insightful guide to the forest for children. Through a series of interpretive panels, he encourages an understanding of the forest, it’s residents and processes.
White Pine Bush is 29 km north of Napier on SH2. There is a large parking area on the left with a picnic shelter and toilet. The track starts over the first footbridge.
The track should be followed in an anticlockwise loop to make use of the interpretive panels.
This tar-sealed 650 metre loop is on a gentle gradient and suitable for wheelchairs. Bridges are wide and boast passing places. A large picnic area is provided at the junction with the Long Loop. This is a peaceful spot to appreciate the forest surroundings.
Some kahikatea in the forest are up to 1.8 metres in diameter. One tree is 38 metres tall and dated at 470 years old. The oldest tree in the reserve is nearly 600 years old.
Rimu, totara and miro are the other common podocarps. The understorey is composed of tawa, hinau, rewarewa and mahoe.
White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve was established in 1923. It now represents 19 hectares of conifer-broadleaf forest, which makes up a pitiful 3% of Hawke’s Bay’s land area. The reserve was originally part of the 10,647 hectare Purahotangahia block, sold by Maori to the Crown in 1915.
