Information

Tauwhare Pa Walk

1 km return | 30 minutes return

Tauwhare Pa occupied a prominent position on the western arm of the fertile waters of the Ohiwa Harbour.

Walking Track

Access

The walk departs from the parking bay on the left, 500 metres after the junction with Harbour Road at Ohope.

Track

The track climbs on a metalled and even track to the pa on the hill. Wide, mown grass tracks lead around the remains, allowing for extensive exploration of the site.

Polynesian History

The harbour was known as ‘The Food Basket of Many Hands’. Inhabitants would have fished for kahawai and snapper and collected oysters, cockles and whelks in kete (baskets woven from flax).

The remains of the pa, which was probably built around 1700A.D, still shows the defensive ditches that would have protected the three-tiered platforms. Interpretive panels show how the village might have functioned, aiding the imagination to form a realistic picture of the pa’s anatomy.

The location was frequently contested between Ngati Awa in the west and Whakatohea in the east.
