This was an amazing experience. This is a must do in Taupo. Incredible hospitality with utmost professionalism. Our guide - Jade - was entertaining, and really maximised our experiences on the rapid while ensuring safety at all time. The whole company / team is certainly one of a kind in its operations!

Hi Gary,

We are so glad to hear you had a good time rafting with us, and found all of Jade's jokes 'entertaining' and not 'corny'. He is a very valued member of our team and will be thrilled to get this feedback.

All the best,

Guide Jerum was amazing with instructions and made you feel perfectly safe while keeping it exciting. Highly recommended. Even saw a pair of blue ducks!

It is nice to go on a tour where you are treated like family and not like a number. We have done many adventure based travel activities and haven't found any with as friendly and caring team as Garth and the team. Our rafting guide Hayley was awesome... Great local knowledge and she didn't race us down the river like we saw happen with the opposition company that overtook us at a rate of knots.
It was a beautiful part of the world and Hayley made sure we enjoyed every second of it. Great adventure with the rapids, even got to see New Zealand's rarest duck, the Blue Duck, (even with chicks)...

After jumping in the river several times which was running at 7 degrees Celsius, the trip to the Thermal Pool and the cup of homemade Tomato soup was a welcome ending to a great afternoon.
.
They catered for the young and old, as well as the adventure seeker. Highly recommend to anyone, certainly the best river rafting operator we have used...

We did both the North and South Island for a 2 week family holiday. We found the Tongariro Family Float in the top 2 things to do in NZ as a Family. It has a great blend excitement, fun, education and good humour for both kids and parents. Great guide and hospitality both on the river and back at the shop. 👍👍👍

I love tour operators who put people first, and Garth and the Tongariro River Rafting team clearly do that.

My experience began with a ride around the Tongariro River Trail. I was provided with a quality e-bike, helmet and map and was sent off feeling comfortable about the adventure ahead of me. The trail is fantastic, no significant challenges, shared with walkers and anglers and offering fun for all skills of all ages. Riding over the suspension bridge and getting the views of Turangi was a highlight.

Then it was into the cold water gear to hit the rapids. Our guide To was sensational. Knew his stuff, communicated with passion and had us covered every step of the way. You're well looked after with again, high-quality gear and experienced local knowledge.

The Tongariro River has to be experienced to be believed. Over 60 rapids across the 13km run, it's impossible to not be immersed in the beauty of the river. The trip itself was just sensational - To brings along hot chocolate for a mid-run break, along with chocolates to munch on. We also had the chance to see the Whio (Blue Duck) and Rainbow Trout on a few occasions. There is the chance to get out and swim and the footage they capture (including 360 degrees from a GoPro Fusion) are great for memories. Lastly, you wrap up by being driven to Tokaanu to warm up again in the thermal pools before returning back to the shed for warm soup and bread. Just an unreal complete experience.

I honestly can't recommend this team of legends enough. Seriously, a must do adventure for your trip to the Lake Taupo region.

What a fantastic day and an Oarsome experience. We booked as a treat for our work team to say thank you for all their hard work and had the best experience ever. All of our Team finished wet, exhilarated and with huge cheesy grins at the experience we just had. With a fantastic guide in Rennie and awesome scenery to fantastically huge trout lots of fun rapids. I can definitely recommend this trip to anyone who wants to give rafting a try. Finished the day with a warm up at the hot pools and then the best home made tomato soup and bread before heading home. Well done guys and thanks for an awesome trip. Will definitely be coming back for more.

Loved everything about our trip and the company! Made a last minute booking the day before for a group of 5 and the whole team were very accommodating. Johnny and Kelly, our guides on the river, were very friendly and very knowledgeable. The hot chocolate and chocolate fish half way down the river were a very welcomed addition, as was the hot pools and soup at the end! We did grade 3 which was the perfect combination of teamwork to get down the rapids, but also some free-time to look at the fabulous surroundings. Stopping to jump off a small cliff was also very exciting.

Would 100% recommend. It will be a highlight of your trip!

Our guide was fantastic, was very informative and she encouraged us to ask questions about the river, the area and wildlife she was a helluva rafter. He gave us clear instructions yet still made the trip very fun. Hot chocolate and chocolate fish a great personal touch.
We would absolutely use Tongariro River Rafting again and certainly recommend to visitors to the area. A fantastic trip and the chance see a part of the Tongariro River that cannot be visited any other way.

Although we have lived in the Tongariro area for some time and have rafted previously, I had never rafted on the Tongariro River until late February this year. We were lucky enough to raft on a quieter day with only the guide and a young Scotish couple so we had plenty of action and an awesome time. I even jumped into the river from the rock (and apparently screamed loudly). This is an activity that can be enjoyed by young and old alike but certainly enhanced by the exceptional service of TRR Staff. Firstly, the guide Dion was an absolute legend! friendly convivial and engaging with adults and children alike, not an iota of boredom or descent considering he must have done this trip thousands of times, he was the reason I feel compelled to write this reveiw. The down side was the unprofessional approach of one of the ancilliary staff. He was cajoled and offered opportunities to involve himself in our experience but remained distant and aloof at all times. Rafting with Tongariro River Rafting was a great experience for our family. Ryan, our rafting guide was knowledgeable and very safety conscious and as a result we trusted him completely and had a fantastic time. Hearing the stories of the area and how the rapids were named added to the charm of the expedition but could not compare to the raw beauty of the Tongariro River seen from the raft.

The experience didn't finish when we got off the raft. We were taken to hot pools where we could warm up, shower and change out of our wetsuits (provided by TRR) and then taken back to base for soup and bread. We didn't know how exhausted we were until we realised we'd been eating in silence for twenty minutes.

We really appreciated the photos they'd taken of us before, on and after the water so we could remember the afternoon.

Sensational stuff, we were complete novices but felt totally at ease on the water, excellent equipment and safety input. We went down in two rafts piloted by Mike and Hudson, real quality guys who loved to joke and banter but were also serious about the safety and experience for everyone, they were also concerned about a very inexperienced group of four following behind and more than once stopped to help out. Food was laid on after the trip and no one left the base until well after 6. Great day, fabulous river, super people running this venture.

The occasion of my 50 th was what started the planning with tongario rafting. Garth and his team provided us with options of an overnight experience. 2 days rafting with a camp overnight on a farmers land right at the waters edge. Starting up river from Owhanga and finishing at Kakahi.
We had 25 in our family and friends group aged from 7-to my parents of 81 years. Everyone raved about the trip, an ultimate experience from woe to go Some discribing it as epic. Challenging and exciting and yet reasonably comfortable due to the lodge made available to us for cooking and ablutions, yet not to cuisey as to not give us all the great outdoors experience. Yes,we slept in tents...for some that was a real first!!
Our rafting guides Camo, Dally, Hudson and Dee were outstanding, creating excitement and challenges all the way, helping those "out of their comfort zones"to traverse rapids and climb through a huge fresh water waterfall via knotted rope ladders to its pool base, and pushing others who wanted too. Rafting through gorges surrounded in Virgin native forest, seeing blue ducks( an endangered species of water fowl) a real bonus.
Stunning weather, hospitality plus from our hosts on Brock's farm, Fantastic dining from the BBQ, wonderful friends and family combined with immaculate organizing and wonderful rafting crew made for an amazing 2 day birthday.
Thank you Garth and your fantastic staff. No- one will forget this trip..from the very young(who stated as they left..." it was the best weekend ever!!!" to the teenagers who rafted "Doris" claiming it was an epic trip and those who are more familiar to this wonderful part of the world
.......We will be back...

a "bucket list" Awesome trip and memories..thank you

Leigh, Rens, Danielle, Bria and the extended family and friends.

Had a magic afternoon yesterday down the pristine, picturesque Tongariro river. There were only the 2 of us in the raft (we had expected more), so we had a private, personalised session, and enjoyed it immensely.

Being level 3 rapids, it wasn't overly risky, and there certainly were periods where we got sufficiently soaked and thrilled on the way down.

We stopped after half an hour's paddling to climb the bank and jump into the river, which was also a massive buzz.

The team (Jimmy and Dee) looked after us expertly with humour and intersting stories mixed in specific advice and clear instructions. All in all it was a great day and would certainly do it again - a perfect mix of beauty and adventure.

As an aside, we had car trouble on the way out of Taurangi after the rafting, and were very impressed that one of the staff stopped to check on us to make sure we were OK. That is not part of any normal service and summed up the genuine nature and class of the guys at TRR. Thanks all!

We had great fun on the Tongariro River Rafting trip. Even though we booked the trip only the day before and because of travel time need to book an afternoon trip, they accomodated us, "no drama." The preparation was organized and efficient, the drive to the put in was short, the guide experienced and skilfull, the river beautiful, the excitement thrilling. The Class 3 rapids were just enought thrill while easy enough to be able to enjoy the scenery. This was a great part of our 3 weeks in New Zealand. We highly recommend this company.

We rafted with an experienced guide (Ryan) and a trainee (Andy), both of whom were great fun.

The gear provided was in reasonable condition and kept our heads safe and bodies warm.

I thought the cost of the photo CD ($30) was a bit rich, but the rafting experience itself was excellent value. Oh, and the sandwiches served when we got back were delicious!!

I was very fortunate that the other adventurers that were supposed to accompany Ryan and myself on the Tongariro River rafting experience did not show, so I got the royal treatment. Ryan was funny, informative and friendly and an extremely experienced rafter. I felt completely safe and even slipped into the water for a dip at Ryan's suggestion in a quieter part of the river. The scenery was amazing and Ryan told me a lot about the rock formations and the wildlife in the area. I had told Ryan that I was hearing impaired and could not wear my hearing aids on the river and he was loud and clear for the whole thirteen and half km and through 64 rapids. Thanks Ryan! I had an awesome time!

Choose to raft the Tongariro River in Turangi with Tongariro River Rafting and you may be one of the last people on earth to clap eyes on the New Zealand native blue duck (whio).
We were among the lucky ones to get close to one of these small whistling birds on a picture-perfect January day during a family float tour of the river.
Tongariro River Rafting guide Mike Dally grew up exploring the Tongariro River and took his sense of adventure with him into a career in the outdoors three years ago.
His love of the job is obvious.
As soon as we make it through the first set of rapids downstream from Blue Pool, Dally calls a casual greeting from the back of the raft.
“Welcome to my office.”
We are joined by a family of five from Noumea, New Caledonia for the morning trip.
Three of the four boys are in awe and raptures as white water grade two rapids usher the boat downriver.
The team soon rallies with multi-lingual whoops and shouts after a quick paddling lesson.
Dally’s knowledge of the Tongariro River, world famous for its rainbow trout fishing, kayaking, rafting, camping, walking, and mountain biking opportunities, is personal and scientific.
The whio we see early on in the trip near the Poutu intake belongs to a species 25 times more endangered than the kiwi.
The New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation awarded Tongariro River Rafting a special accolade in 2009 for its work protecting the whitewater habitat of the whio.
It deserves many more accolades from happy rafters, from child novices to experienced locals, this year.
In a word: terrific.

I was surprised how warm it was due to weather still cold in Taupo. dont hold back guys if you think its cold. It isnt.
my partner is also in a wheel chair and he totally enjoyed it.
i cant say enough, we left Taupo by Taupo float plane and got picked up by Tongariro River Rafting. My partner was helped into the plane by owner operator Neil and then the crew from Tongariro Rafting took over.

A special chair on the raft made it possible for Eddie to sit and feel safe. The saftey standards are high and crew outstanding.
We did the mark 3 course, wow to everything.
I am still buzzing.
I highly recomend if in Taupo, go out for the day. Start on Float Plane, fly over lake taupo with guided tour and then the rest of the day with the crew from Tongariro River Rafting.
For large groups, they can pick you up no trouble.

We were a bit nervous about rafting and thought we'd book the family float as a first time experience. The team at Tongariro River Rafting got in touch and convinced us that our girls, aged 12 and 14, would be fine on the whitewater rafting experience (a longer trip with more rapids), assuring us that it wouldn't be too scary for any of us. They were SO right. Awesome experience - thoroughly recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure - and Thomo was an awesome guide. Photos were great to have as a momento, we felt completely looked after the whole way (not too safe, not too scared). Hot pools at the end were a lovely touch, as was the homemade soup and chocolate along the way. Thank you George for the assurances and fantastic communication, as well us helping us with all the gear and how to put it on, Terry for driving us around and taking great photos and Thomo for being so entertaining, for the excellent instructions, the beefy paddling that kept the raft going in the right direction, the jokes, and for making us feel like it was the best possible choice of family adventure activity possible on a cold winter's long weekend!! Nice work, team. We'll definitely be rafting again! Cheers

A very professional outfit, well equipped and catering for all ages. Our guide, Tim, soon had us working as a team, 'the best team of the day', and we paddled our way down all 65 rapids safely and thrillingly. This was a level 3 ride, lots of white water and at times you wondered how the raft was going to make it, but thanks to our intrepid paddling, and a lot of steering (and shouting) from Tim, it did. Great photos too, the waterproof camera provided for our use was a very thoughful touch and then there were more professional ones taken from vantage points on the bank. They kindly picked us up from Taupo and returned us there, were polite, entertaining, hot on safety and the wetsuits and buoyancy aids were all fairly new. The route down the Tongoriro River is nothing short of spectacular both for pristine scenery and the number and variety of rapids alternating with beutifully scenic gliding sections across clear, quiet pools. The guides know their way through the river to give you a entralling ride and are able to provide a tour talk on the way down. Depending upon flow conditions and recent rainfall, this is a 3/4 and is ideal for first time rafters who want the thrill of a good ride but aren't sure if they are up for it. first of all i should say this is a must do for those that have not tried it before. We had a mix of thrillseekers to reluctant participants in our raft and they all enjoyed it. Not too scarey and not too tame. The guide knew his stuff and had what it took to keep everyone involved and feeling safe. It was about the right distance and i felt it was good value for 2 hours when you compare it to the Zorb or the like which last a minute or two for not much less. Why not a 10....Im being picky but amongst all the photos taken there was none of the cliff jumping, which was a highlight for some. $40 for the dvd of photos is not bad value, especially for us as our group where in so many and some real classics.

Friendly, good humoured staff that gave us advice on how much water proof gear to wear. A large, very clean room with lockers was provided to change. We were then brought to our location about 10-15mins from the base. Saftey was paramount and the guide gave us all the relevant instructions before we set down the river. Johnno was very knowlegeable about the local area and pointed out the very rare Blue Duck (2000 left in NZ). The gentleman who owned the company had raised funds to protect this beautiful rare duck. The scenery was unspoilt and was very scenic There were many rapids and they were difinitely suited to a first timer . At the end we were bused back to base where we changed an went to the hot pools to heat up. It was definitely worth the money.

Excellent from the minute you walk through the doors: great staff, top safety instruction, first-class equipment... AND THEN the excitement of a very fun river with knowledgeable guides full of stories and humor. We have rafted in CA and Western US and Central America, others in the group were first timers. All of us had an exciting and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Topping it off we got to soak in hot springs and were later further warmed with hot soup and bread. Couldn't have been better - except possibly if we could have done it again the following day! Thank you Ben, Toby, Thomo, Garth and everyone - super experience! We'll be back as soon as we can.

As white water rafting virgins, we absolutely LOVED this experience. Our guide Ben was really fabulous and we thought it was one of the best experiences in NZ so far. The scenery was truly spectacular and it was 2.5hrs of fun and thrills the entire way down the river. An absolute must for locals and tourists!

I popped my Whitewater Rafting cherry with the TRR team, and I must say it was unreal. Our guide, Jonno, was a riot and the experiance was spectacular!
As long as you don't wanna buy the CD of photos (price was pretty steep for a CD) at the end you'll have memories to last a lifetime!

It has been a great day. I made my first rafting experience. We had an great tour guide and lots of fun. We had the possibility to jump from some cliffs and to go swimming in the river, but everything was just optional. No presure at all to do it. We had a good lunch afterwards. Just a perfect trip

Had a great morning. Fun and friendly guides & base staff. Enjoyed opportunity to jump off the cliff and go for a swim mid-course. Happy lunch was provided, gave a great forum to reflect and discuss the experience and view the photos. Guides were very knowledgeable about conservation of the river and other activities available. Thoroughly recommended and would gladly go again.

Garth and the team gave us {ONTRACK} an experienceThat will be very hard to forget.A relaxed professionalism and confidence which made us amateurs feel like we had been doing this for years. Its the only way to really appreciate the awe of the Tongariro.Being up close and personal with the local wildlife was an added bonus.Above,on and below the water. To be within arms length of a pair of Blue ducks is up there with being with the dolphins off the Coromandel coast.

Had a brilliant time on the water with Thomo - this was way more fun than I expected - felt safe the whole time, and the river is just sooo spectacular! Loved the jump into the 'fresh' water - and surprisingly didn't feel cold at all for the rest of the trip! Felt like I was in another world or on a movie set, it's spectacular. Thanks so much guys, the pics are already on facebook and we'll tell everyone about it! :)

This was a first time rafting experience for me. Luke and Callum were really great. I was really impressed with the dry land instructions and safety checks before we hit the river, must have been good because we did'nt can out once! The weather and scenery were fantastic and the ride thrillin. Some idillac scenes with hopeful fly fishers trying their luck to hook the trout that we could see swimming in the clear water below. A nice light luncheon provided afterwards whilst a slide show of your personal photos were viewed. Bought a great fab in house designed T shirt to. A fantastic memory forever for this nifty fifty. Well done guys n girls.

Had a great day with the crew recently. Having done some guiding was really impressed with the focus and philosophy of the company around safety and making sure that everyone had a great time. The Tongariro is a great river with fun rapids and beautiful scenery and the opportunity to finish at the hot pools complements a really special trip.

Exellent experience in late May - very impressed that operators were prepared to run the tour despite the fact that only 2 of us were booked to go. Professional but very friendly outfit and suitable for beginners as advertised. Nick was a great guide and the location is fabulous. Great value; will definitely recommend it to others. River was freezing, so voucher for Tokaanu hot tubs afterwards was greatly appreciated! Bought the CD of photos, which are fantastic quality too - one of the most memorable experiences ever.

A competent, friendly, and safe small operation. We were provided with large changing rooms to don excellent waterproof gear (wetsuits, wetsuit boots, fleece, sprayjacket, and buoyancy aids) and helmets. We were transported from the Turangi office in an ancient van (the only downside) which also towed the raft. The paying passengers were the launch and recovery crew. We were given instructions on the meaning of the paddling commands and on rescue procedures, which sounded more complicated than it turned out in practice. The steersman was friendly and well qualified. The river was not at all daunting and suitable for beginners as advertised. The obligatory photos were taken at the start and finish and were available in several formats; we thought the CD was the best option.
