Beautiful spot just outside Wellington. Not lots of spaces, but some free up when cars leave. Lovely view of the sea and an easy drive to the ferry.
GERARD & AXELLES
Very, VERY windy spot.
right on the edge of NZ.
what makes it windy as, hence hard to cook outside or even sit outside.
toilets right next to the parking, and clean enough.
About 15 spots for regular vans or vehicles.
NOT suitable for motorhomes etc..
very nice views and walks!
but again, alot of wind! so be prepared if you're going for a walk.
come on time, spots were full every day, and we stayed here 3 days.
with a bit of luck, you can spot a pinguin or seal.
rough coastline, very rocky.
but amazingly beautiful!
Nice Free campsite 5-10 Min. outside Wellington. Lots of Space for CV but quiet popular. Clean flush Toilettes. Incredible view over the ocean and cliffs with a walkway along the Coast. Perfekt Spot for one Night when travelling with the ferry to the South Island the next Day. Drive to ferry takes about 20 Minutes.
One of the most beautiful spot for freedom camping! Few spaces, but great location for a walk to the Red Rocks. Toilets are clean.

Perfect place to stay at Wellington. Just 10 minutes away from the city. Very nice and clean flush toilets. Right into a beach with cliffs, amazing location. Place for around 20 vans, but we also saw campervans in the normal parking. Nice walk at the nearby beach and nice coastal road to get to Wellington.
Very congested even in October
Arrived at 18
30 one space left. Mirror to mirror parking.. beautiful on shore parking
2 very clean toilets with hot water. Very windy during the night. Glad we were packed like sardines.
Very few spots unless you want to camp illegally. And it is not cool to do that!
Arrive early to get s spot here. It pays off to wait for the "normal cars" to depart as the beach is popular at day too.
The toilets are okay and are open 24/7.
Stayed here for two nights
Such a great spot if you are getting or arriving from an early ferry! About 12 free spots available, toilets are clean and have hot water. Can be windy at this spot but bearable. Beautiful sunset!
We were there after night arrival of our ferry. In order to find a parking place only for half night. On arrival there we saw there already parking camper vans and we parked beside them on a parking place. In the morning a friendly man wakes u sup and advised us to leave cause only car parking allowed on our ground. We hadn't seen it. Finally it's a good spot but think Wellington could give more camper vans sites there cause in the night I think no cars parking there so much.
Pls check connected pictures in this app.. think the map does not fit to the latitude. . Thx
Quite place with Great view, just in front of the beach, very windy at night. Public toilet with hot water which is perfect for us, definitely a free camper side for campervan (5 of us, large campervan).

Paeceful place, 2 toilets available 24h and clean !
You can sleep with the sound of waves.
From here you can see ferries cross to south island and beautiful mountains in background.
Great location but really small spots so we moved on.
Great view of the ocean. The waves were crashing up against the rocks making it nice to fall asleep to. The washrooms were very nice. Water tap was located just outside of the washrooms.
Only about 10 pitches and parked so close together we couldn’t open all doors. Toilets open 24hours. Stony beach not easy to walk on. Take coast road to town... picturesque drive. Very very windy night... thought we’d lose our roof covers!
Great free spot with wonderful views!! Yes, it’s a parking lot area but right on the water, with great landscape, flushing toilets, potable water and walking tracks right on site. Be sure to get there early-ish though as spots are limited.
We stayed the night before taking the ferry and it was easy access in the morning.

It is a stunning spot with a great view of the south island. It seems to be very popular and can be difficult to park at. It was basically full when we got there at 4 pm. Apart from that it is great and even has accessibility to drinking water and two public toilets.

Great place!! Amazing views and amazing location!! Only for selfcontained though there is 24hours open public toilet (clean and modern). Perfect place to stay for free if visiting Wellington. Take a walk on the beach and do the road on the coast to
come back to the city. Arrive early tomsecure your spot. It was full by 20:00
This site was fantastic! We arrived at 5pm and there were only 3 spots left so you must arrive early! The walks are great, especially the one through the valleys that follows the stream - not for the faint hearted!
A beautiful location right on the bay. There are great facilities, including drinking water and flush toilets. There is a great path you can walk along the bay for a long time. There are limited free camping spots, so get there early to claim your spot. Also double check the sign to make sure you are parked in the free camp spots. It is just a parking lot with a a few spots reserved for freedom camping.
Phenomenal view - when the weather is pleasant! No hiding in case of strong winds. Toilets and even a-plugs available during daylight. Time to ferry max. 30min on workdays, we needed only 15min on Sunday 7am.
Noisy on weekends because of 4wd-fans playing on the gravel beachroad until 10pm.
But worth a visit!

Really beautiful freedom camping spot, with relatively clean, 24 hour toilets. Can't beat the views, and quite peaceful, even though it had filled up with campers by 7-8pm.
Found the last spot but did arrive at midnight. The place was not windy for us, though quite rainy. Very quaint to hear the waves crashing. It is a nice place that gives you the feeling you’re far from a city yet you are close. The toilets are open all night and are very decent. The only minus point for me was that we were so close to the other campers but that’s probably because we got lucky previous nights.
Really nice spot that gets quite busy. Toilets are probably the nicest we had from a freedom site. Hot water and proper hand dryers are a luxury! The location itself is not too windy considering some of the comments. We were fine but guess it's weather dependent. Really beautiful views and really nice walk along the beach front!
Stayed for one night after reading reviews. Brilliant site for the ferry. We arrived about 6.00pm and it was half full. Within an hour there was no room left...so get there ASAP. As this is part of the Marine Reserve it had an information centre with probably the best public toilets we encountered yet. The hand dryer even worked and it had that amazing glowing purple light thing on your hands.
It's at the very well named Happy Valley Road.
Best campsite ever. Free and beautiful view around. Good and clean facilities, no bugs around. Highly recommended.
Great place on a beautiful bay. In the middle of the city and yet somehow apart. Worthwhile after a late crossing from the South to the North Island.
Rosanne van Dooren
Car park at the end of the road with nice toilets. Amazing view, definitely the best free place to stay before or after the ferry. Can fill up quick. 4 out of 11 places were occupied in September. Watch were you park. Only at the end are campsites!
This was the pick for me. It was just after big storms in Wellington and the sea was monsterous. The van shook all night with the wind but that just added to the excitement. A very scenic winding road to take you out there. Council security did come and check compliance stickers on vehicles and sent a couple of vans off. A great spot.
Good location, was a bit busy but got there around 8 pm and there was still plenty of spaces. Bathrooms are about 150m from the parking site. Was quiet at night, but busy in morning with a sign for a running club. Would stay again.
Lovely spot to spend a night close to Wellington, but out in peace and quiet. It wasn't windy the night we were there, lovely walks, good swimming. Loos fine.
Really nice spot along the coast, it can get really windy but you wake up to a beautiful view. It's about a 10 minute drive from the city but it can feel like a different place out at Owhiro Bay. Seems like a popular place during the day so it can get a bit noisy. The lot is patrolled by security for self-contained vehicles too.
Yes, it is windy here. But this gives also spectacular views when the gusts blow flying water over the ocean and the mountains of the South Island show at sunset at the horizon. There are clean toilets, well maintained with soap and paper. Be aware that not the whole carpark is available for freedom camping but only a small part for maybe 15-20 vehicles.
Got toilet with warm water, quiet and beautifully scenic. Busy at evening time. Not many spaces and just some areas are allow to camp. Too windy very hard to cook.
Very nice location, parking at the entrance of the marine reserve and the waterfront. Toilets nearby.
OMG... Never experienced such wind. We have a large campervan and I woke up with nausea from the rocking and rolling... Thought it would turn over. Would not stay there again, despite the price (free).
For self-contained only, a beautiful place!
Tim De Boer
Quite small but we got a spot anyway. Toilets were clean and the views are perfect! Only a short ride to the city centre.
Basic public toilet. Good view but windy.
Quite busy campsite, but with clean toilet and nice sea view. Sometimes will be too windy......
Close to Wellington and free... toilets and warm water. Awesome sunsets.... but very windy.
Beautiful freedom camping spot right by the water. We stayed two nights, the first we thought we would be blown away as it was so windy! The second night was calmer though. The toilets were good and clean, the information centre was interesting. We got a good spot both nights as we arrived around 4pm but by nightfall it was very busy. It was a 20 minute drive from the ferry terminal. A great place to stay in the suburbs of Wellington.
Free overnight spot directly at the coast. Good before or after you take the ferry, even to avoid the expensive prices in Wellington. Quite busy in the evening, so don't arrive too late. Toilets not very clean anymore. Can be quite windy!
+ very spacious (can handle up to 40(?) cars
+ facilities are "state of the art" in measures of other free campsites and stay open 24hr
+ beautiful to wake up, as you are on the very first beachfront
- (very) windy at times but nothing to worry
- always busy campsite
- it's just a car park. Nothing special to it
Nowhere better to stay than here!! Beautiful views, great walks, clean toilet etc. AWESOME. We stayed two nights, only 10 min drive to city!
Located with a beautiful view of the bay just ten minutes from Wellington, there is only a car park to sleep in your vehicle for free. Gravel roads and tall unruly grasses deter tents from being pitched. There is a cool 4WD track that begins at the end of the car park that runs along beach and up the mountain. We will be back for more camping and trekking, and perhaps an additional search in daytime would help us find a place to pitch a tent on a trail. There is a lit toilet block with treated, warm drinkable tap water (but no showers) that is open all night long, and during the day a gallery room opens up with signs and posters about the area. It's fairly busy, even in winter, but still quiet besides the crashing of waves. There's no privacy except when you're in your car, but a comical collection of cars nonetheless. This is an unsurveyed area, and we saw no one to implement laws. We saw nothing to suggest the area was unsafe, but as always take precaution by locking up your vehicle. Since we were inside or leaning on our car the majority of the time, we felt secure, but it could also be seen as a mecca for thieves. Stayed one night in June 2015.
This is a nice free camping ground with a wonderful view over the sea. In addition you have toilets with warm water and light.
Best freedom campsite I've stayed at, good location great views and handy for the ferry.
Free showers and toilets, quite windy. Beautiful sunsets on the sea front.
Around 8 km away from the Wellington CBD and easy to get there. Campsite is right next to the beach which was great. Toilets were not that clean but I wouldn't expect more either. I've seen lot worse. We would recommend that to everyone.
Marion and Julie
Great free camping option. There's a lot of space and you can park a few meters from the sea to enjoy a beautiful sunset and a stunning view! However, the toilets were dirty and the place is really windy, there is no sheltered area and we had to use our cooker in the car. Easy access to the ferry terminal, you just have to follow the coast.
On a nice evening this Freedom Camping spot rates really highly as it's still pretty close to Welington City but it feels a world away. It's a beaut location overlooking the marine reserve and Cook Straight. But, by facing south it's open to the teeth of a southerly weather event, thus feels the full bite of wind and rain that this weather brings. Plus, because it's nestled beneath some tall hills to the north, it loses the sun early in winter. So if you're looking for a freedom camping option and the weather is coming from the south, the Freedom Camping spot at Evans Bay will be a little more sheltered (although far less picturesque). But if it's nice weather, on a summers night when the wind is light, Owhiro Bay is hard to beat!
