Great camping spot right by the lake but crazy busy. Full of freedom campers. Get there early if you want a lakeside spot. Just a toilet for facilities. Some road noise from pretty early in the morning
Great big Campingspot next to the lake.
Come early for first row we came at 4:30 pm and catched the last spot in the first row.
The toilet is the only letdown for at least 100 campervans only 1 toilet is a shame. Waiting in line to have a poo is not so pleasant in the sun.
Otherwise there are a lot of bikes and runners transiting threw the campingspot as it is on there loop around the lake.

Backpack On Fire
Tons of space! Probably the largest freedom camping space we have seen yet. It does get busy with the best spots filling up early, but you can arrive anytime and find a spot to park there must have been 50+ campervans and buses there. A lot of the larger trailers and vans at this location because of the space. As mentioned there is only one drip toilet so expect a short line and night and in the morning. Very windy but it was a nice change from the heat. Close to town and great sunsets over the lake.
GERARD & AXELLES
very nice spot. enough space for 50 or more. doc campsite.
only one droptoilet though.
but it's for self contained only, so should not be a problem.
beautiful swimming spots and views.
safe, clean and simple.

Fantastic site! Got here around 4pm and it was already very full. We stayed New Years Eve and there was easily 100 free campers or more. One long drop toilet hence the -1 rating. Good spot to swim in the lake too, just be mindful of the ski lane which we weren’t and got yelled at by some locals. Very quiet at night!
Great place to stay, although it can be crowded.
The lake view on a bright day is amazing
It is a good campsite close to Taupo. We arrived around 19.00 and there were few sites. It is good indicated
Amazing location and free!
We came here with our 7m long camper. A lot of space available. Very beautiful sunset seen over the lake. It is possible to go swimming.
Toilet is available but no water. (This is 1 point minus in the rating).
We would stop here again next time.
Many campers, even if toilet is available, it's better to use own one. Nice view on the lake. You can hear traffic from the road.
Good views but crowded and no order to where people park up, large site however. It’s a bit of a free for all. Only 1 toilet for a very large site was a bit of an issue. Views are great if you can get a lake side spot.
Really nice place although very crowded. Need to come early but the view is fantastic and the lake is nearby to jump into it. We did not use the toilet so not comment on that. But we came here back on the second day - recommend it.
Beautiful location on the lake, a lot of space, a little windy.
Thanks to all the good people working for the NZ Department of Conservation - for all your hard work - making NZ more beautiful, accessable and healthy! Cheers 😍
