Lovely spot by the river, very friendly staff. Only a few spaces for campervans but parked right by the river. Kitchen and bathrooms clean and well maintained.

- Lack of privacy because the spots are right next to each other - feels like a parking lot.

- Showers included, but not very clean.

- Kitchen isn't fully equipped and most of the stuff was dirty.

+ River is awesome.
+ Staff is very friendly.

>> Payed 34$ for 2 people - would have expected more.

Powered site for 1 is a tad bit expensive but worth the price if you’re after a nicer experience. Sites back onto the river with an amazing view. Hosts are wonderful and super helpful. Get in early to get a more private park but either way you will still have amazing amenities, limitless shower time, good clean kitchen facilities and laundry area.

We stayed at Awastone with our little non-self contained camper van. The place is beautifully located right at the Whanganui River. The toilets, showers and the kitchen are very clean and tidy, WiFi is free and fast, and most of all: People are extremely friendly and helpful. Would have loved to stay longer, take a kayaking trip and have a few more beers at the bar.

Stunning, quiet spot right beside the Rangitikei River with towering white cliff backdrop. Loved that we could have campfires and there was a bar/cafe. Amenities clean and tidy, owners friendly. No cost for showers and free 1 GB wi fi. Both Awastone and the basic Mangaweka Campsites are unique and special. Highly recommend.

The location for itself is already really awesome. Quiet spots next to the river with a great view. The campsite is very clean and nicely kept.
But above all it's Tricia and her staff who made our short stay really special. Extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. We will definitely return.

Amazing experience! The staff were so friendly and helpful, they went above and beyond to make sure our rafting experience was amazing. Our rafting guide Connor was incredible and made sure we had the best time possible! And after the rafting we were greeted by a warm shower and some tasty snacks. Cannot recommend highly enough, the whole family will remember it for years to come!

Fantastic spot to stop off and relax for the evening before or after your trip along Desert Road and Tongariro. Receptionist was present and told us all we needed to know. Top marks for free laundry, toilets, 1GB WiFi and hot shower.

A nice, small campground next to the river Rangitikei. We paid $17 per person with a caravan for a powered site. The sanitary installations (toilet, shower and kitchen) are a bit windy but ok. You get 1GB wifi for free, which is pretty cool. The thing this place lacks is, that there is somebody at the reception during the day to give you any advice. There are no walking/hiking trails apart from a 10min. walk to a dam.

Reviewed over 3 years ago

Awastone responds:

Many thanks for your constructive comment..although we do have a number displayed at reception for guests to ring during the day for any sort of inquiry. Actually, you missed out on the Ruahine National Forest of which our campgrounds are at the base of. There are plenty of day walks into huts or peaks through there. I suppose we only assume guests are already sorted with that information prior to getting to us - so appologies for that..we certainly can provide more info.

We wanted a site near to Gravity Canyon and the i-Site in Taihape suggested this one, and what a gem it is! We didn't book and when we turned up we were the only campers here in January. The facilities are fab and very clean, and the owners are very friendly and helpful. All the pitches seem to have views of the spectacular river and cliffs. Well worth stopping by.

Fantastic campground. Quiet, small, and scenic. The lawns were nicely mowed, the showers hot and clean, the washer was free and the dryer was reasonably priced, the kitchen was clean and had pots provided. I stayed here early in my trip which at the time I did not realize how special this campground was with the level of maintenance and care given by the very friendly owners. They responded quickly with my booking emails and questions about their adventures. The campground is inclusive in pricing - wifi, showers, and washer are all covered. All sites are by the river. Really a fantastic campground which is a hidden gem. Don't let the bridge keep you from this really special location and experience. Loved it. Also look into their Scenic Float which is an absolute delight with stunning scenery, gentle water, and delicious lunch. Great lawns to play on if you have kids. Highly recommend this campground and the adventures offered.

What a fantastic place! This was a total gem - Trish and Paul were fantastic hosts and even in the middle of winter our welcome was a warm one. We had a beautiful riverside pitch for our camper van with a beautiful view. As it was our daughter's 8th birthday the night we stayed, we all piled into the hot tub and star gazed. It was fantastic and we'll never forget it. The facilities were really lovely and the kids even found fossils in the stones in the riverbed which have now come back to live with us in Singapore! Thanks, Awastone - you have helped us create some magical family memories. We would thoroughly recommend.

I recently spent my 40th Birthday at Awastone and it was amazing, what a magical place for all of my family and friends to come from around NZ and overseas. It really is a hidden Gem, set on the banks of the rangitikei river, the papa cliffs are a wonderful backdrop, a bonfire and the hot tub just top it off.
Thanks guys, no doubt we will be back again and again :)
