Papakorito Falls

Papakorito Falls

Lake Waikaremoana

100 m return | 5 minutes return

Papakorito Falls are particularly impressive, as the bottom half of the bluff is on an angle and the water bursts into a spray of white on contact. The 20 metre falls empty into a clear pool, frequented by ducks on the scavenge for tasty titbits in the aerated water.

Aniwaniwa Road leaves from opposite the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre and continues 1.3 km to a carpark, from where the start of the track is signposted.

From the carpark a grassed and even track follows the sound of the falls to where they tumble over the bluff. There are two good viewpoints (one with a bench) nearby. If you want to venture to the base of the falls take care over the slippery roots.

You can also do this walk straight from the Visitor Centre. Add 45 minutes. From the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre, the unsealed road meanders alongside the Aniwaniwa Stream (20 minutes) to the carpark. There are numerous large grassed areas with picnic tables on the way.

The small clearing surrounding the falls was previously burned. Now the vegetation is regenerating with toetoe fronds in abundance.
