This place is banger!

This campground is a little known gem. Access isn't easy as it's situated on Waiheke Island. But jump on the ferry and make the effort. You will be well rewarded.

We booked here for the night paid and were supposed to emailed a code to get in. We never got the email with the code. So we parked across the road for the night. We used the toilets and they were clean, fresh water close by.

The phone-in booking system is a pain in the ass and what they don’t tell you is that the gates are locked around 9 pm. So, if you have a vehicle, don’t plan on dinner or a movie out. The icing on the cake was the fact that it’s a hellhole of mosquitoes. We tried it 2 years in a row; both times, even keeping the doors and windows closed, we awoke to dozens and dozens of mosquitoes inside the van. Ok, yes, it’s pretty.

This is a wonderful campground in a stunning location next to Rocky Bay which looks out towards Auckland city and several of the Waitemata harbour islands including Rangitoto. The campsite is situated in Whakanewha Regional Park which possesses a series of interesting nearby walking tracks. The campground facilities are excellent and include flush toilets, clean drinking water, an outdoor sink for rinsing and washing dishes, and outdoor cold showers. The only downside to this campground is access to and from for those without transport - the nearest bus stop is close to an hour's walk from the campsite - and, in our experience of staying at Poukaraka, this has caught several groups of people unawares. If you have access to a vehicle, or even a bike, while staying here it makes access and travel around the island much easier.

Very nice grassy location on the island. You will need to call on the provided telephone (next to bathroom) to get the gate code for the week. It is set inside a nice park and next to the beach. Very pretty park, locals use it a lot and there is a view of Auckland from the beach and up the hill on the track. You can walk from camp to the bus stop (we took the track) in about 45 mins. We did this when wine tasting. Clean flushing toilets a bar b que and an outside shower for rinsing off sand.
