Kamahi Loop Track

Kamahi Loop Track

East Egmont, Egmont National Park

Information

600 m return | 15 minutes return

This short walk is the easiest introduction to the forest around Mountain House. The goblin forest here is often alive with kereru, who fly between perches amid much wing flapping and disturbed foliage.

Access

In Stratford, turn into Pembroke Road, signposted Egmont National Park The Plateau. The Department of Conservation Area Office is on the left after 8.2 km, 1.7 km before the entrance to Egmont National Park.

The Mountain House is 4.5 km inside the park boundary, 4.5 km below the Plateau Carpark at the roadend.

The start of the track is signposted from the grassed picnic area just above the top entry to Mountain House and just below the chalets.

Track

The even track is aided with steps and a footbridge on its descent to below Mountain House.

European History

The Mountain House is a step back in time. Exhibitions of paintings cover the walls and lend a yesteryear charm to the stately lounge and restaurant. The current Germanic owners have infused the ambience of an Alpine chalet, mixed with the traditional old world colonialism of the early New Zealand mountain hospitality.

Stratford Mountain House was originally planned for the Plateau. Curtis and Penn (of Curtis Falls discovery) had constructed the first house by February 1899, a rather ramshackle affair of iron roof and canvas sides. The following year the structure was substantially improved with the cladding of the sides in iron. Later modifications fenced the hut and made it look like a two room cottage. Later it became clear the site was too exposed and the building was moved to near its present location.
