We joined the last trip of the day and were lucky enough to see six Yellow-eyed Penguins coming out of the sea to return to their nests.
The walk to the hides is about one km long and there are quite a few steps. However, seeing the penguins made it worthwhile.
Great passionate tour, you start in the rehabilitation centre where actually great work on Yellow Eyed Penguins is done. Then they take you out on the premises to see the penguins in their natural habitat.
Very few to see for a lot of money.

Small, informative tourist funded charity. Beautiful land with knowledgeable guides who explain the huge efforts to protect the Yellow Eyed Penguins. Also get impressively close to the fur seals. Very quiet in October, may be busy in Summer.
We went to see the Little Blue Penguins returning late in the evening. First, we got a lot of interesting information, then proceeded down to the beach afterwards. It was amazing to see these little fellas arriving and stumbling up the beach! Bring a jacket, it is pretty windy!

Very interesting tour, passionate and committed people. Lots of background information on the penguins. Good network of camouflaged ditches to view the penguins from.
We only saw three penguins!! Not enough for $52!
You get to see a reservation for Penguins. Wandering around in a tunnel, we saw sea lions, penguins feeding their fluffy kids and we got told anything about penguins that you would want to know.
We visited the Yellow Eyed Penguins on Otago near Otakou, it was very interesting and sweet to see the penguins and learn how they live.
Save up to 70% on campsite fees! Support conservation and experience the natural beauty of NZ. 78 Department of Conservation campsites, one convenient pass.
One very good tour. The penguin rescue hospital gives a great opportunity to see the penguins up close.
Brilliant. Great guide and an amazing way to visit yellow eyed penguins, blue penguins and some seals.
We were a small group in the winter, but hugely enjoyed the experience and particularly the local knowledge that came with it.
High recommended and a great cause to support.
Very educational, loved getting to be right in the habitat without disturbing them.
Friendly staff, what we paid was perfect for what we got.
Lots of information provided and extensive network of blinds and tunnels allows for viewing wild penguins without disturbing them. I appreciate the work they are doing with habitat restoration and in the hospital raising the many chicks orphaned this year. Happy to support these efforts with some good words and the admission paid.

Penguins were great! Downside was french guide, hard to understand and discussed inappropriate subjects for a family walk.
A wonderful tour, 49 dollars, but worth it.
Well explained and interesting tour.
Access savings worth hundreds of $$ on Top Ranked NZ Accommodation and Activities for just $1 per day.
Great tour! Briefing and guide excellent, very interesting and beautiful landscape. Have seen many penguins close also some seals!! You get a lot for the price of $49PP. Best tour is the last one in the evening!!
Very nice to see the young penguins on the nest and penguins coming out of the sea.
We had an excellent tour, seeing 5 penguins on the beach, great views of a lone juvenile, young which had been fed, a baby being fed, and an adult swimming on the small lake. The "baby" which was fully-grown was sticking it's head inside the hide! We had a great tour and would recommend this to any bird-watcher. The time of day was 6pm which apparently is a good time for viewing.
Penguins treated very respectfully, friendly staff, we have seen a lot of animals (penguins, fur seals).
The owner does a great job with her penguin preservation and shows great passion for what she does.
We did not see anything - oh yes fur seals.
Yellow eyed penguins close up.
Good guided tour, much of penguin to see. Learn a lot of the penguins life.
We arrived on the Otago Peninsular believing that it must be possible to see penguins in the wild without spending large entrance fees, but that is not made easy.
Having said that, the tour was interesting and informative and they do a great job supporting the penguins but overall we did feel exploited.

Tour starts with some information about the penguins, then bus to the penguin beach, walking through camoflaged walkways. Very close encounters of penguins!!. Really a fun activity.
Well thought out, informative - opportunity to view wild life in natural setting. Well organised and worth doing.
Great tour, helpful guide, great landscape.
Fantastic experience, great set up and the kids loved it to!! Great guide and they have a really good set up.

Privately run by family - saw yellow-eyed penguins - money goes towards their penguin hospital & recovery program.
Well organised, informative and enjoyable.
Very interesting guide.
Missing link for booking on webpage and very difficult to get the correct address to drive to.
Despite poor weather conditions persistance of guide made experience unforgettable. Hide positions excellent and would put Twizel to shame!! Lots of pengins and young seen.
Nice place and very good explanation
Nice tour. Very bad weather but still nice experience. Really good, informative guide. Got to see a sea lion which was a nice bonus.
Very enthusiastic guide. They really care about these penguins. Was very happy a large portion of the tour price goes towards the conservation area. Will recommend!
Excellent. Very knowledgeable guide. Genuine conservation in action. Beautiful location which makes for an enjoyable walk as well as the chance to see penguins in the wild. Reasonably expensive but the money is going somewhere worthwhile. Highly recommended.
We were lucky to see several penguins up close and one coming in from the ocean very far away. I was a little disappointed that we didn't see more penguins though. It was one of my highlights on my trip to New Zealand and was one of the few reasonalbly priced activities that we did in New Zealand.
We stayed at the hostel on the property which was clean, comfortable and had incredible views from the patio.
Nice people took a lot of time explaining about penguins.
Very nice tour, very close to the animals.
They give good opportunities to watch wildlife. Very enthusiastic people, they care for nature.
On the otago peninsula - by dunedin.
Let down. $127 for 4 people and just some ill penguin babies in a shelter. Found 3 sleeping penguin babies in the dunes / no adults.
Very good guide and a close view of the penguins.
Doing a good job. If they knocked $10 off the price then it would be fine.
Really good tour. Fun guides, and we got really close to the penguins.
We got the impression that they were helping a lot and were very fond of the penguins.
Second time there. Better than seven years ago!
We walked through tunnels with the guide who was very informative.
Really good, went on the last tour of the day - great!
Not too much talking but good info when it came. Saw penguins and seals. Get very close to penguins. Good guide. Very personal. Nothing better.
Beautiful scenery, alas hardly any penguins.
