Hands down, these guys are the best! Our day in the canyon was a great mix of adventure and beauty, and so much fun!

Also, shout out to Wayne and Anne who were fantastic guides! Super friendly and knowledgeable. Helpful, encouraging us to new things and challenge ourselves but never pushy or intimidating.

Even if you know nothing about ropes or canyons or abseiling, you gotta give this a try!

Great experience. We had a winter canyoning experience with our group, and it was definitely cold, but mainly very fun and super spectacular.
Highly skilled and experienced guides (Sarah & Anna) with equipment in perfect condition. We felt safe and in good hand all along.
The guides were also very nice and chatty during the whole excursion. Very enjoyable and memorable, highly recommended!

As someone who had never tried abseiling before, my day in the canyon was unbelievable! The guides were very professional and fun. The view down the canyon from the top was fairly intimidating but I had full confidence that they would keep us safe. They took lots of great photos as well. I would recommend Canyonz to anyone looking for a defining experience to their New Zealand adventure!

We took our staff to do the entry level abseiling and they loved it, although I personally was terrified we couldn't have had more encouraging people look after us. The staff were still talking about it on the Monday so say no more! Thank you for the excellent service, and we couldn't recommend highly enough

WOW! I did lots of adventures around the world, but this one is pretty special!

There are many tourist adventures around NZ, where you feel just like another cow in a herd. This one is different. This one is very personal! You don’t need to be a tourist do this!

If you want to experience beautiful nature where most of the people can’t get......if you want to push your limits....if you want be in presence....if you want to feel the adrenaline in your blood....but feel very safe...DO IT! If you are thinking of it...DO IT:)

I loved hugging the waterfall, I loved seeing the amazing scenery, I loved to be scared before big jumps and I was proud of myself what I have done.

I had an opportunity to meet the owners and most of the guides and they are beautiful people loving what they do. They are professionals in their field with very long experience. I felt very safe with them.

I think you should be little bit fit to enjoy the steep walk uphill and a long day to get down:)

The day made me braver to face the real life.

Thank you the whole team for your amazing work!!!!!!!!!!!!

We found Canyonz through TripAdvisor and after reading the pages and pages of positive reviews, my husband and I locked in a full day of canyoning. Let's just say that it was the BEST way we've ever spent the very last day of the year!

Wayne and Anna were incredible guides, chatting non-stop and really just being so easy to be around. We were super lucky to have just the two of us and one lovely girl who was doing the day tour on her own, so a tiny group of 5, including the guides. The hike up to the top was incredible, steeped (pun intended!) in history and storytelling, expertly relayed by Wayne and Anna - cheesy rom-com chatter appreciated too!

The canyoning, abseiling, jumping, sliding and ziplining down was ... life-changing. The most gorgeous scenery, clear and cooling water and adrenaline-inducing drops were just out of this world.

This is 100% a MUST-DO when visiting the Coromandel. One day, when our two boys are old enough, we're bringing them back to do it again with us!

I was the one who booked the trip and was also the one most hesitant to participate because of my complete fear of heights. Our guide Anna was such an enthusiastic and patient teacher that she helped quell my anxiety and our family TOTALLY enjoyed every second. Anna is such a professional and so cheerful. The company is well-run, the trip was perfectly guided, the day was one our family will always remember with joy. Thanks, Anna!

Kia Ora,
If you are reading this review then you are either doing or deciding to do the Sleeping God Canyon with Canyonz.
These guys are awesome. Wayne, Bree & Bernard were our guides on the day and were fantastic, friendly, supportive and very professional.

Don't be fulled there is no helicopter to the top of the canyon. Its about 1 hour walk quite steep incline so medium fitness is required and well worth the walk.
The scenery is amazing and the thrill is real.

I loved the fact everything was included, knowledgeable staff, transport, lunch, photos, wet suits, shoes, helmets, waterproof packs and even a BBQ afterwards.
I give this 5 stars ++++++ and will be doing it again for sure.

Also bite the bullet and do the whole day so much better than the half day. I did it with my Sister who shouted me for my Birthday BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVEN
Keep up the great work Canyonz.

Saw this adventure under "Things to do near Thames" & at the same second I decided I HAD to do it - I also decided I was too OLD to do it. Was planning to go sky diving, but my heart wanted the Full Day Canyon. Never been canyoning before, abseiling, rock climbing or the like, in all of my 60 years. Live in a perfectly flat countryside. What was I thinking!!!! But my heart was taken and I had an overpowering desire to give this a go. Contacted Canyonz almost a year before my trip and inquired further about fitness and any age restriction or concerns. I was mainly concerned about the 300m climb but set about walking up and down the local grandstand steps and started doing mat pilates, to try and build up to it, plus kept walking daily for an hour. The day after arriving in Auckland, I took the ferry across to Rangitoto Island and did the hike up an back-like a trial run. Russ and Anna picked me up from my accommodation in Thames. Friendly, casual and professional. Great attitude to help settle the nerves. As it turned out, the climb up was manageable and I was actually surprised when we arrived at the starting point.
Russ and Anna were AMAZING. Even though I was feeling confronted and like I wouldn't be able do it, their calm preparation, instruction and confidence made me feel like it would be alright, I just had to TRUST them. And I did do it, gingerly I admit, but did it. Even two of the three jumps. At no time were any of us rushed, asked to do more than we felt we could or pressured and Russ and Anna were continually checking that all was well, with each of us. The lunch was GREAT, thank you - you will appreciate it.
For a full year I longed to do this Canyonz trip, for the whole year I doubted I could, age, fitness or that something would happen to prevent it going ahead on the day. I worried for nothing - yes it was challenging, physically and mentally but more than any of that it was AMAZING and I am extremely glad I listened to my heart.

It was the first time canyoning for us and we couldn't have wished for better guides or more beautiful location! We chose the full day option and it definitely is not for the faint-hearted. I'm usually not afraid of heights but this got my feet shaking. But we felt really safe the whole time with our guides Russ and Anna - they really were the best encouraging and guiding us through the whole process. We had a lot fun jumping down from 10m heights (not mandatory!) and abseiling down drops up to 80m high. We're not even half way through our trip but I'm sure this will be the best experience in NZ. Highly recommended!

What can I say, the whole experience from start to finish was amazing!

We were lucky enough to be able to spend some unforgettable memories with Wayne and Russ on the FULL DAY Sleeping God Canyon trip.

As natural adventures we loved this trip. The scenery, banter and adventure made for a perfect day despite the weather trying to put a damper on the trip!

You start of the day with a walk up to the canyon which at times can be testing but Wayne and Russ ensured that we got regular breaks and that the pace was right for everyone :)

As someone who is terrified of jumping from a height into the water, I can confidently say these guys are AMAZING at what they do. At no point do you feel pressured to do anything out of your comfort zone BUT if you are willing to give something a go that is well out of your comfort zone they are there for you, not only mentally but emotionally.

I can proudly say that thanks to Russ and Wayne I challenged my comfort zone and I won! I successfully jumped off all cliff jumping options....EVEN THE 14m JUMP! :)

The team at Canyonz are not numbers focused, they are truly passionate about where they work and love sharing their passion for the outdoors and canyoning with others.

I could not recommend the Team at Canyonz highly enough. You guys are awesome!

I will be back!

Had and absolutely thrill seeking time doing the half day canyoning session with wayne and gareth. We done it as a family for a birthday present. We had zero experience and knowledge about canyoning and the boys were patient and awesome at teaching us the ropes (literally). Abseiling down waterfalls and jumping off rocks into pools below has never been so fun. Worth every cent. We have now booked in for the full day canyon session with more family this summer. A good variety of food for lunch that was provided by them and it even came with a priceless view. Definitely a 10/10 activity from me and my family.

The website photos were enticing and fortunately I did not see the video which was playing at the Kauaeranga Visitor centre when we arrived on the day as I certainly would have had second thoughts had I seen it before booking. The video showed stuff that I would never dream of doing.
My husband and I are 56 and we like tramping and cycling trips and had been thinking about canyoning for the past couple of years- we have done virtually no abseiling. Russ and Teri were calm and so incredibly upbeat that when I felt like giving up or tried opting out of sliding they gave me so much confidence that I would change my mind and found myself doing stuff out of my comfort zone. They made things fun and super safe at the same time.
The karakia (prayer ) at the start and the fabulous hamburgers at the end made the day's adventure pretty special too.Lots of fantastic highlights including abseiling over a waterfall, sliding down a rockface, speeding on a zipline over a gorge. I will forever have a giggle over Russ's observation of my husband being "not exactly petite" after he ziplined him at a rapid speed over a gorge.
I would definitely recommend this to everyone who is reasonably fit and possesses a spirit of adventure as this is unforgettable.

If you only have the money/time to do one adventurous activity, do this! The guides are so passionate, friendly, helpful and focused on safety. This day was a big challenge for us, and we are so stoked to have made it!
We are 38/39 years old, city slickers who like to jog pretty regularly, but that‘s about it. So, moderate fitness levels. No experience canyoning/abseiling. The day definitely tested our limits, but I never ever felt like I was in a situation that I (or the guides, if I screwed up) couldn‘t handle.
First off, they really give you all the gear, incl. shoes, that you need. I was cringing at putting on another nasty wetsuit like for other tours until I saw their gear: clean, really good, thick wetsuits (extra gear for those who easily get cold or head out in cold weather), helmets, neoprene socks and excellent canyoning shoes (amazing grip on wet boulders).
You then hike about one hour uphill with your wetsuit/gear in a backpack. The backpack is not really heavy and the hike is at a pace that works for everyone, but you definitely get a workout. Then the fun starts. In ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING SCENERY!
The start is a bit of practice in abseiling and jumping with the guides always checking and re-checking your gear. A huge emphasis on safety. They also work really hard on getting the group dynamic to work, always calling you by your name and making sure you feel confident and including everyone in discussions. Abseiling next to the waterfalls - in some of the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen in my travels - with the sun creating rainbows in the water is so amazing. The abseil IN the waterfall was not my fave part of the day, but so glad I had the opportunity to do it (and succeed!). The day is definitely strenuous - that should not be underestimated. But the guys really do know how to deal with any problems/issues.

It really is worth every $!!!! Thanks, guys, for our best day in NZ!

We've been travelling around for nearly 2 months around NZ, and this has been the most memorable experience so far!! We were accompanied by an absolutely amazing, super professional guide Russ who ensured we not only felt safe but also were making the most of the entire experience. It starts with a challenging but super beautiful 45 min hike up through the forest during which Russ shares a lot of great history and interesting details about the surroundings that you walk through. Once you've made it up, the abseiling starts with the first 3 descents already being the most challenging. I probably wouldn't have gone if I had known beforehand what I had signed up for (if you're afraid of heights, definitely don't watch any movies on their website beforehand) but man.. what a way to overcome your fears!! Once you get going you get more and more excited that you can actually do this and so it has been such an amazing mental as well as physical challenge. By the end of it, you truly feel like you can do anything - such an amazing feeling that is! And another thing that's great about this trip is that Russ makes sure that he captures every single moment - even whilst you're hanging off the cliff, super upset that you have to hang there and smile for the camera - and you will have a record of every single moment of that day, and all for free. Even just hanging out with Russ and chatting with him was so much fun. To sum it up, totally worth your time and money, definitely a NZ must do!!

Descending through this amazing canyon would probably fun no matter who was running the trip, but Canyonz brings the experience to a whole new level. I have done a lot if this type of activity (heli-skiing, whitewater rafting, canyoning in other locations) and I have never experienced such a well-run guiding outfit where they have literally thought of every detail to make your experience fun, exhilarating and memorable. I rarely write reviews - maybe once a year - so I have to be pretty taken with something to want to endorse it. But I'll tell anyone who will listen that this should be on their bucket list. THESE GUYS ARE A CLASS ACT! - My job in NZ is a travel agent, I have done pretty much all the trips and tours in NZ from bungy jumping and skydiving to helicopter trips to Volcano's and Glaciers HOWEVER this is my favourite and most enjoyble trip I have done in the past 2 years in NZ.

The guides, Russ and T, were amazing. They made the trip flow perfectly to maximise the time during the day to give the best experience. Throughout the whole day I was entertained either by having a casual chat or by the ziplining, scrambling, abseiling, rock jumping etc etc. This is REAL CANYONING, if you like the outdoors you will love this. Canyoning is literally what scares me the most, but with these guys I was able to push myself out of my comfort zone but in a comfortable environment.

Although the initial price may seem more than other trips, I GUARANTEE you will have no complaints by the end of the day and would pay to do it again at twice the price.

We are used to do canyoning in France and Italy and we can assure you that this is one of the best we've ever done. It had everything we expected from a canyoning: long abseils, great jumps, scary slides, ziplines... All in a beautiful and protected environment but most of all, Wayne & Russell (the two guides) have the best spirit, are joyful and always make you feel 100% secure. They are the only people to operate in this canyon and they take small groups so you don't feel like in a factory like we did in the Queenstown canyon.
This canyoning trip is by far the best activity we've done in New Zealand. It's a full day of adventure, laughs, and you get rewarded by a great barbecue with everyone involved in the trip at the end. Plus their pictures (that they send you for free) are awesome!

A friend of mine was visiting from the states, and over the course of the week we hiked in Coromandel, did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, white water rafted, Zorbed, fly fished, kayaked, and bungy jumped. At the end of the week neither of us had any question about our favorite activity--hands down, canyoning with the CanyoNZ boys was it.

As others have said, the guides make the day. Both were pleasant as could be, and worked themselves ragged to see to it that we were safe, comfortable, well fed, and having a great time. This full day of adventure would be a bargain at a much higher price, and the fact that you're fed twice and go home with excellent quality pictures at no extra cost makes it all the more impressive. The gear was outstanding and clearly in excellent repair, the food was fantastic, and the day was a total highlight.

Don't be daunted! If you have a reasonable degree of physical fitness (could you run a mile if you had to? Not fast, but could you make it?) then put this at the top of your list. Our guides Russ and Nick were great about catering the experience to the capacity of each individual.

And a word about the jumps--I watched the videos they had online and thought to myself "well, I'll do the rest, but no way I'm doing that crazy high jump". The day proceeds in a very stepwise fashion to the point that by the time it came for the biggest jump, it was super exciting, but I felt totally ready. It was an exhilarating experience to get through and by the end of the day you really feel you've done something.

Do it! It's worth the price!

The most adventurous day of my life! Russ & Wayne are super-awesome - really friendly, highly knowledgeable and experienced so from the very beginning I felt totally safe even whilst doing some of the most challenging things I've ever done. The hike up the canyon is challenge enough, then throw in a bunch of abseils, a couple of jumps (if you have the guts), a slide and a zipline or 2, and you've got yourself one hell of an adventure.

An absolutely stunning setting - it really showcases New Zealand's beauty, and Russ & Wayne showcase the Kiwi warmth and humour whilst being completely competent and attentive to each person on the trip, meeting you where you are at and helping you face the fear and get over it. The feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day is like nothing else, and best of all, you have the pics to prove it, included in the cost! The whole activity is amazing value for money compared to other attractions when you think you can pay a hundred or two for something that lasts only minutes or an hour, and here you get a whole day out with 2 guides who really know their stuff, plus all the gear you need, all the food, and the photos too.

I can't recommend this trip enough; if you are looking for a challenging day out, this is The One.

This day trip is worth it in every single way! After the challenge of an approx one hour hike well into the mountains, you're rewarded with beautiful views of the canyon and waterfalls that you'll spend the rest of the day descending. Awesome abseils, jumps, slides, and a zip-line fill your trip down through the canyon. Wayne and Russ were fantastic guides for both the experienced and those who have never canyoned--very safety-conscious, professional, and personable. As if the adventure and views aren't enough on their own, we also received a packed lunch in the canyon, grilled dinner after the hike out, and all of the awesome pictures from the day included in the price. A reasonable level of fitness is definitely expected, but I would recommend the trip without hesitation!

My sister loves extreme experiences, and suggested we do the Sleeping God canyon. After seeing photos on their excellent website of the action in store, I admit to feeling slightly apprehensive. This feeling lasted for all of a minute once I saw how professional, friendly and knowledgable our guides were. After carefully selecting the best gear for each person, they ensured we all knew what the plan was for the day, and our adventure was underway. After the hike to the top, we got to practice our abseil technique and some smaller jumps to ensure we were ready for the big stuff to come on the way down. The lunch stop came at just the right time, in the sunshine sheltered from the breeze, and they even provided gluten free options for this Glu-tard. :P

The guides have a vast amount of experience and manage to perfectly combine safety with scary! They double checked our harness at the start of each decent, and their gear was in top condition. They were encouraging and enthusiastic, and seeing how good they were at their jobs was very reassuring.

The photos are excellent and a true reflection of the fun times throughout the day. Ending with a BBQ in the outdoors was the icing on an already fantastic cake. Thank you Canyonz for an unforgettable day!

A great experience.

Russell and Wayne (the guides) provided an outstanding day.

Their experience and relaxed nature made everyone in our group feel comfortable and confident in their leadership.

The day started with a 0830 pick up from Thames followed by a short drive.

Next a 30 minute hike through beautiful native bush got us to the top of the canyon and from there we had a quick practise at abseiling and diving into a rock pool before starting the descent.

We abseiled down numerous waterfalls, the biggest being 80m (divided into a 30m abseil to a ledge followed by a 50m abseil).

The guides let us clip into the ropes ourselves but were constantly checking to ensure our safety.

On the descent we had opportunities to dive into rock pools. The biggest dive being 14m. Those who did not to wish to dive into the pools could abseil down.

The guides also took numerous photos throughout the day and electronic copies of these were forwarded to everyone at the completion of the trip at no extra cost.

There were no big hikes between each waterfall and the whole day was just full of action.

Not only did we abseil and jump down but on two occasions the guides rigged up a flying fox style descent which just added something a little different.

We stopped for lunch part way through the descent and at the completion of the activity the guides cranked up the BBQ while we got changed into dry clothes. All of the food was included in the cost. There was a vegetarian on our group and they ensured that her dietary needs were met.

All clothing- wetsuits t-shirts or thermals, shoes and helmets were provided by the guides.

We arrived back in Thames at about 1820hrs.

Not only was it an action packed day but the beauty of the region and canyon were stunning.

I definitely recommend this activity to anyone who loves being in the outdoors and amongst nature and likes to challenge themselves.

Well worth it!!!

I found this trip in my Lonely Planet guide, and the couple of lines that were devoted to it were woefully inadequate to relate how amazing the actual experience was!

Russell and Wayne were fantastic guides with over 20 years of combined experience. They were attentive, funny and got their safety points across without being boring.

The canyon we traveled through was unbelievable. Big abseils and big jumps (lots of adrenaline) to be had all with an amazing forest backdrop. I never felt that there was any danger because Russell and Wayne were so on top of things.

You'll encounter people while walking up to the first abseil, but after that, it's easy to feel like your group are the only humans around for miles.

I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to get outside or anyone who wants to do an adrenaline adventure in New Zealand. I'm ready to do it again myself!

Amazing experience! I did a full day trip in the Sleeping God canyon, Coromandel. Very fun, professional guides made everyone, including the beginners feel very safe, while still challenging the more experienced group members. The whole day was very well organized, from pick up downtown Auckland, to the explanation and instructions with the gear, to the barbecue waiting for us at the end of the day. Would definitely do again!

We did the Sleeping God Canyon in the Coromandel. Russ & Wayne have recently taken over the running of this canyon. We are experienced canyoners, and the other people on the trip were inexperienced/novices and they catered to all parties professionally. Our highlights were the tyrolean traverses (flying foxes). It is a good day out in the bush but you'd want to relatively fit and ok with heights/exposure. The BBQ at the end of the day was a nice way to finish off the trip.

Canyoning, also known in the US as canyoneering, involves a variety of outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and/or swimming.

Good experience and I felt safe. I chose it over AWOL as it was pure canyoning and no beach filler. I wrote a full review on website The Perspiration Journal with a video of the experience.
