We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. The Maori show was excellent and because the meeting house limits the number of people who can attend it results in quite an intimate setting. I would recommend to anyone that they should go if they get the opportunity.

In my opinion, a very good introduction to the story of the Maori people and their relationship with the English Crown. You can spend a long time there, there is really a lot to see and the place itself is very beautiful. It is really worth it if you want to understand part of this country's story.

Interesting place and well done, but as others have also said it is much too expensive. Also, I know they pay their taxes, but why let in New Zealanders for free when foreigners have to pay ? Not many such places in other countries do that. There are too many staff who seem to spend time chatting and joking with one another instead of attending to visitors.

The site is quite small. The main features are the Treaty House, which is just an historic house, as the treaty was signed out in the grounds not in the house. Also a very nicely carved Maori meeting house, a large waka (canoe) a forest board walk.

We did two additional tours on top of the entry fee. $15 each tour. The performers in the Moari hapa haka were mostly very young. It gave you a little bit of a taste of things, but the other tours we did provided better information and also the performers were more skilled.

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get a feel for Maori performance/culture I would say that the Maori Experience at the Auckland Museum and War Memorial is much better value for money and provides both better information and more highly skilled performers.
