A lighthouse, grass roots penguin habitat restoration and a penguin hide. This hide is hidden, so your likely company will only be penguins.
From SH1 take the turnoff to Moeraki (800m south of the turnoff to the Moeraki Boulders) and take the first right into Tenby Road. After 1 km take the right turn into Lighthouse Road (unsealed) which continues 4 km to the parking area at the lighthouse.
Cross the stile and descend to the gate, which leads to the hide. Right heads to the pa with views of the beach and kelp swaying on the rocks. Do not be tempted to find that National Geographic shot of the penguins in their fenced habitat, as this will only cause them stress. Be patient at the hide.
Bob and Janice Jones were lighthouse keepers who developed a fondness for their penguin neighbours. They established a hospital, replanted the bay and built the hides. Several penguin pairs found the new real estate so desirable they stayed and bred. Bob and Janice were recognised with international honours for their kindness to the penguins.
Yellow-eyed penguins weigh around 5 kg and stand around 70 centimetres tall. They breed in southern parts of New Zealand and Sub-Antarctic Islands in spring. Chicks are reared during the summer in nests constructed of flax. During the February moult, birds are vulnerable. Be Aware. Observe their behaviour and don’t hassle them for a photo. You have another home to go to. This is their home, so use your manners. Numbers are in serious decline.
Several ships came a cropper on the coast round here, so in 1878 the Katiki Point Lighthouse was constructed. The wooden tower is 58 metres above sea level and is 8 metres high. It has a 6 second period and can be seen for 10 nautical miles. It is mains powered and has been unmanned since 1975.
